Well, I first played ME1 after I finished Dragon Age and wanted more Bioware action. So I snagged it and beat it. ME2 was still a month away and it was torture waiting for it. I say play ME2 now.

Parasite Eve[psx] and Bastion[PC] (if you count it as an RPG/Hack n' Slash)

I've had PE for the longest time, but I never had the time to sink into it. Only about 2 hours in, but I'm really enjoying it.

Even looking at guides, they were all text ones online at the time so they pretty much all said "What are you, stupid make yer shit blue!" Too many other games and way too long that I didn't feel like remembering what I was doing even if I got it at this point. Hopefully you figure that one out or find a picture guide so it doesn't hang you up. :)
I'm at the final boss of the game now, pretty tough. But yeah that color stuff was so random. All of the puzzles in this game are bizarre really. Once you get past the "your armor has to be a certain color" padding puzzles you start getting "now you can only wear certain pieces of armor" puzzles. For example, one of the end game puzzles require you to only wear boots, or the statue won't teleport you to the next area.

Having almost beat Evergrace (gonna finish off the game tonight probably) I can say it was a fairly enjoyable game, but I probably wouldn't recommend it to someone. There's some fun to be had but it's a very slow and boring game. It's pretty good for a really early/rushed PS2 game, but eh. Gonna give the sequel a spin once I finish the bonus dungeon and see how that goes.

That was my second PS2 game. I was getting fun out of it too even if it was slow until that blue puzzle tripped me up. Glad you got enjoyment out of it and are about to finish it.

I'm playing Dragon Warrior and it is the absolute grindiest grindathon I've ever ground. Besides fighting the Green Dragon literally the only thing I've done the entire game is grind to fight the next level of monsters, just so I can start grinding on those. It's somewhat interesting to practically experience one of the grandfathers of the genre, but in terms of playability the Dragon Warrior series has really progressed since this game.

NES. I've heard the GBC ones are much better with the pacing of levels.

The Game Boy versions are a lot less grind-y. It's easier to get into the game which makes it more enjoyable. Grinding for 5 hours before you make it to the first town is not all that fun on the NES.

DQII manages to have more story points, but is even more grindy than DQ1. With DQ1 it was a series of one-on-one fights. With DQ2 it can be 3 vs. 8, and that's a lot of pain for them to dish to your party.
