If you really don't want to use WASD, you can plug a 360 controller into your computer.

Doesn't work with all games though... well you can get it to work kinda. Tried with Mass Effect.. kinda sorta worked.

Really? It's my control scheme and not my posts in political threads?dsheinem wrote:every time you post your bizzaro schemes I seriously doubt your humanity.MrPopo wrote:Out of curiosity, why do you dislike WASD? Years ago, when I finally realized that keyboard only wasn't cutting it for my fps play (I went to college, played multiplayer, and sucked....horribly) I tried a few iterations of custom controls. Had forward on a mouse button and all.MrPopo wrote:Out of curiosity, why do you dislike WASD? Is it that you have your hand cramped up? Because you don't have to use WASD. Eventually I tried WASD and stuck with it. There's a reason people settled on it as the standard, I think. I mean, to each their own, but it's struck me as the default config that gamers settled on and developers incorporated as a result.
Much like an arcade stick over a pad, it might just take some acclimation. It was odd at first to me too...but it didn't take long for my game to improve dramatically, and now I can sit down with default controls on a lot of games with no issue. It's not just FPS games that use WSAD...it's almost anything as it puts a lot of keys under/around your fingers.

Re: WASD Alternitives?
WASD was not chosen by chance!
1)Your index can move very fast up and down but not from side to side, forcing a pyramid formation to avoid using a pinky.
2) WASD is the 4 key combination further away from the mouse for right handed people. This makes it the most confortable.
3) WASD allows you to dedicate a button to space, shift and control confortably. Those are bigger keys than letters and thus quite fit for jumping and crouching.
4) WASD has a lot of buttons close so you can keep full control on your movement while changing weapons or turning on your flashlight.
I can't really think of something really better than WASD for a FPS.
