Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Death Egg is one of my favorite bosses ever :)
I can still remember trying to figure out how to time my attack :)
I'm like that too, about 70% of the games I start I get about half way and then my interest shifts to another game. :P

My favorite gaming moment would probably be either the Area 1 boss fight in Rez, or the Area 4 boss fight. Fighting a running pixelated guy... what more could you ask for?

I thought the final rooftop fight in Shenmue II was very well done, with Lan Di's unexpected apperance by helicopter. Ryo's locking eyes with him as he flew away was a perfect way to end that chapter in the Shenmue saga (if you ask me I think they should have ended Shenmue II there and picked up Shenmue III in starting in Guilin).

Finishing games always provides great moments. I had a hard time with the final boss(es) in Metroid Prime and was really excited when I finally won. More recently I was psyched to beat both Rez and Kotor.

The unexpected is good too. I loved the twist at the end of Metroid: Zero Mission after the game was "over." I was also completely surprised when the Flood appeared in Halo. All of a sudden the game shifts from aliens shooting at you to zombie aliens trying to eat you! I'd never played any survival horror before so it was a thrilling new experience for me.

it doesnt neccasarily have to be a great acheivment, its just that those ones where in my head a that time. I was also trying to get at moment that wowed you, like a game that took your favourite genre to another level (Sega Rally, Soul Calibre, Half life?) or just a moment of brilliant design. I've been thinking like a games are art fag for a while now and considering how the designers had tried to make you feel as you play. I think traditionally they have aimed at the frustrate you with a challenge and reward you with the satisfation of beating it. Which I do love, its still what games are all about but the last few years have seen games that have decent scripts and characterisation, something which was traditionally just an artbitary part of the game but I think add to the level of immersion the player experiences and give rise to moments like the horrible choice you face as Gordon Freeman, or some these other great moments you lot have mentioned.

@Scooter, I know what you mean about returning to a game and beating something that you never could before, maybe its becuase all the built up frustration has faded but I often find the best way to beat something is to leave it for a bit
I'm not sure what you mean by your question, but I was referring to using a four-wheeled vehicle to blow up a helicopter in midair.

When I think of the the greatest moments in gaming, I don't think of moments where I beat a difficult game because I find many games to have at least one difficult part at some point during its run, and I don't really think about moments that define a genre. Instead I prefer to look at the experiences I have when sharing the game with others. I'm a big fan of multiplayer, especially when everybody is just having fun. I joined a club in college that usually featured at least ten guys playing games together in one room, and many of what I consider the greatest moments came simply because we were looking at it as a way to have fun and goof off together.

Take this example. One night several friends and I are playing TFC, on the giant map named 'Well'. Now TFC is a class-based game, with everybody usually having a preferred class, and each class plays remarkably different from the others. Since it's built on the Half-Life engine, there's a lot of physics abuse that occurs in TFC. 'Well' features a giant open area with a bunker in the center and a fortress on either side. So one of my friends is playing the Soldier class and has a rocket launcher, so he rocket jumps over the center bunker to attack the other team on their side. Meanwhile, another friend of mine playing Scout(the smallest and fastest class) is using a crowbar, the melee weapon for the Scout class. He uses a concussion grenade to jump over the same bunker in the opposite direction. Right before the two collide, the scout swings the crowbar and bashes the soldier to death in midair, right before the soldier can blast him with a rocket. The whole room cheers.

It's these kinds of moments that I really love to play for. Of course, if you're looking at it from the "games as art" mindset, I'd have to consider more the psychological impact of a game. What effect did it have on me, or what might have been the intended theme or idea behind the work? Look at Silent Hill. I have moments where I will come across something profoundly creepy, bizarre, or dreadful, things I call "Silent Hill moments," where a little thing is amiss but I notice it. As that's the first thing my mind goes to, I understand the impact the title has had on me.

It's actually kinda funny.

Due to the nature of this topic, there will be spoilers. I just felt wrong in not prefacing my post with that.

Some games I have played are so unbelievably good that the simple act of playing them are what I'd call moments in gaming for me because they left such a lasting impression. One of those games was Ico, which is still one of the most immersive, visually beautiful and emotionally touching games I have ever played.

Another was The Adventures of Batman and Robin on S-NES. I was amazed by how perfectly Konami captured EVERYTHING from the show and the game is STILL one of the most gorgeous 16-bit titles I have ever played. I can't think of any other cartoon based game that was so true to the source material in every way conceivable from gameplay to graphics to music.

As for individual moments within games:

Tomb Raider
T-Rex encounter

Sonic & Knuckles
The bonus stage with Super Sonic vs Robotnick was just plain awesome, and I've actually been wanting to play this game again since listening to the awesome tracks of housethegrate's Project Chaos, particularly the heavy metal based ones for the boss battles against Robotnick

Dino Crisis
Just about every T-Rex encounter was memorable

Eternal Darkness
I got chills whenever I heard those creepy voices when I cast a spell, and the insanity effects provided more memorable moments than I can list. I especially loved the final boss battle though, where the ghosts of all of your ancestors work together with you to defeat the evil that killed them all. It's especially satisfying after having played as all of these characters and watched them die. Brilliant

Max Payne 2
Again this is one of those games where it's hard to pick one moment. I simply loved the interactive way they told Max and Mona's story by having Mona constantly saving and helping Max through actual gameplay. This made me more attached to her than I would be if her feelings for Max were only expressed in dialog and cut scenes. Brilliant use of the medium to tell a story in a way that a movie can't.

Shadow of the Colossus
Quite frankly, every single boss fight in the game was clearly constructed to be a video gaming "moment". I have never before played a game so intent on presenting one epic, cinematic moment after another with absolutely no filler in between. That's an impressive achievement

I could write ten more posts on this topic, but that's it for now

I say it's the coolest thing ever
Sorry, I missed the word 'its' out of that sentence the first time I read it and I wasnt necarsarily aiming the second paragraph at you, I just structured my post poorly.

I totally understand the multiplayer thing although I rarely get to experience it anymore, especially not in meat space as it were. I dont particularly have a defined flavour of moment in my mind either, its just that these are the things that stick in my mind and its good to here other peoples thoughts on this.

Playing Super Mario 64 for the first time ever at an in store demo. I was already a Super Mario 3 nut with my NES back home, and I was too young to keep up with gaming news so it totally took me by surprise. I was like, "Woah!!! It's Mario... and he's 3D. AWESOME!"

Probably pokemon, loved that game so much. Shenmue blew my mind in so many ways, one of the better plots I've seen in a game! The first time I played a Netlink game on my Saturn, just amazing how well it works!

Had a couple:

Leaving your home town in Shenmue. Really moving to leave a town that you have spent so much time getting to know.

Launched off a ramp in GTA4 into the water. Decided to be a smart ass and jump out of the car whilst it was quite high up and land in the water. Out of the whole river, I managed to land on the only boat and die. Good times!

Playing Christmas Nights every christmas to fend off the pre-christmas excitement.
God damn I hate the internet.

Owning, playing, finishing, playing again, find all the secrets, all the glitches of Final Fantasy III on SNES was and still is the highlight of my gaming career. I still don't think I have seen everything there is to be seen in that game, i.e. all of Shadow's dream. Gaming just wasn't the same after that for. FFT and Disgaea were close though.
