WASD Alternitives?

Post by fuctfuct »

My entire life i have avoided PC gaming because i absolutely hate playing with mouse and KB. I don't mind the mouse so much as the WASD.

After playing Oblivion and Fallout on the 360 i think i would rather play Skyrim on pc. I am aware that Skyrim will play with a game-pad on pc but im thinking about getting into PC gaming so.. Are there any alternatives? I was thinking something like using xpadder to map WASD to a game-pad and holding it my my left hand or something. Gonna have to figure something out before i go out and buy a new graphics card.

Anyways i am going to try it out a bit later today ... just thought id ask and see if there are any other ideas you guys have.

The advantage of using the keyboard is that there are so many control options just centimeters away. That said, I know people who have used arcade sticks or ASCII one handed SNES/PSX controllers with a mouse to get away from the Keyboard.

If you still want to use the mouse, but not the WASD, you may need some specialty one handed controller or specialty mouse with extra buttons. WASD is just for movement, but most games also require you to use Q, E, R, Shift, Tab, Ctrl, C, V, and Space, plus your inventory items are in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Part of the benefit of learning to play Keyboard + Mouse, aside from the pinpoint accuracy of the mouse, is also the amount of buttons controlled by your left hand.

Yea i see what you mean. I just tried Mass Effect 1 with a PS2 controller. Never played it on pc before.. awkward to say the least lol. I must have beaten this game 7 or 8 times on 360. So weird playing it now and barley being able to control it hehe.
I tried WASD=Left Analog. The 4 D-pad buttons and both left triggers are in easy reach. Might not be enough though. Have to try it out some more.

You could maybe get a Nostromo or something similar and see about mapping the movement to the D pad on there and then still have the other keys for other functions. But really I'd try to practice with with WASD and get used to it. Maybe play some Doom/Doom 2 so you only have to worry about WASD and a button to activate doors instead of movement, jump, activate, crouch, grenade, reload, lean, and flashlight.

If you really don't want to use a mouse and keyboard you can get your favorite usb controller and download Joy2Key. With Joy2Key you can make a profile for each game that makes the key layout the most comfortable and the program emulates the joysticks to mouse movements.

You can get software drivers to emulate the Keyboard over to a Gamepad such as JoyKey2 recommended by KDub. You can also go nuts and mod a Game Pad or Arcade Stick to a Keyboard Encoder PCB, a definite way to guarantee every Keyboard only game work.

Just to reiterate, using a joypad in the left hand and a mouse in the right will severely limit you on modern games. Back up through Quake III and UT you could do it if you moved and jumped with the d pad and trigger in the left hand and scroll wheel for changing weapons and maybe a thumb button for crouch or activate. Maybe if you had that crazy mouse with a dozen thumb buttons you could manage, but I dunno under pressure in a FPS.

Out of curiosity, why do you dislike WASD? Is it that you have your hand cramped up? Because you don't have to use WASD. You can use a crazier control scheme, like I do.

Other then just not being used to it. I have mild RPI in both hands from using computers for so long. Though i'm starting to think it might be mild arthritis. Never seen a doctor about it. hehe

I have tried it out a bit since my original post .. its not that bad. It just feels "wrong"
