What moments can you remember that will stick with you forever? like maybe mario's head on the menu screen of mario64, or when you first got a megamushroom, or turned sonic yellow? or first saw Virtua Fighter running or pulled off a dragon punch perhaps?
Mine would include mainly moments of acheivement like when I finished Shining the Holy ark, or Syndicate on the MegaDrive. Another great moment was when me and my wife figured out what the bubbles in the ocean did in FFIX (which we did without an faq).
Whats got me thinking about this is No More Heroes, beating Shinobu whas satisfying in the extreme and one of the best gaming moments I've had for years
What are your alltime great gaming moments?
Greatest Moments I have seen in gaming...
Most of these are done on PC, mind you, and in a room full of guys playing the same game.
Battlefield: Desert Combat mod. When the mod creators put this spiffy mod together, they decided they needed gas trucks in the game. So the gas trucks were drivable vehicles with no weapons that exploded in a massive fireball if you even tapped a building. They quickly became a vehicle of choice amongst my friends.
So anyway, one day we're playing this map that has gas trucks, where the two bases are on opposite sides of the map, and our base has this hill on it. And this guy on the enemy team has swiped a helicopter and is camping our main base. I manage to sneak out before this happens, but most of my team is still trapped in the base. So I snag a point and as I'm running off to another point to grab it, another teammate(actually, it was Fastbilly) rolls up in a gas truck and starts screaming "Get in! Get in!" Of course I do, and he drives me through the next point and onto the road towards our base. There's a hill next to our base, and Fastbilly points the truck towards it and tells me to get out. I refuse, and he guns the engine, picking up as much speed as he can before he hits the hill. We get there at top speed, make it to the top of the hill, and the gas truck flies over the top in an arc. At the same time the guy with the helicopter is flying past the hilltop, firing down onto our teammates. Fastbilly screams to jump, and both of us leap from the vehicle only moments before it collides with the helicopter in midair. Both of us deploy parachutes and watch the wreckage fall to the ground. All the players are screaming and cheering. The room is in an uproar. I say it's the coolest thing ever. Fastbilly responds by turning and teamkilling me with his rifle. It was a good day.

I rarely have the attention span to actually complete many games, so I'll go with beating Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Death Egg is one of my favorite bosses ever
I can still remember trying to figure out how to time my attack

I can't tell you how many times I made it to the end of the last screen only to not know what to do and having time run out on me!arion wrote:Beating the last level in Flashback man that took a time to figure out
One of my more memorable moments, not exactly an accomplishment, was in Tomb Raider II. I had just killed the T-Rex and was feeling pretty damn proud of myself.....until the SECOND T-Rex came out and ate me. Trying to hunt the things in the dark was a stroke of genius by the game designers.
As far as accomplishments I guess I could say beating the final boss in Decap Attack. I had played through the game time and time again only to get trounced by the final boss. I gave up on the game altogether about half a dozen times but eventually always came back. The first time I beat that boss something just clicked and I don't think I took more than 1 or 2 hits from the boss and the battle was pretty easy. Funny, that seems to happen to me a lot when I give up on a game in frustration only to pick it up again later determined to finally beat it or get past a particular spot.
@Ack, well go on then, what was the cool thing that you said?
it doesnt neccasarily have to be a great acheivment, its just that those ones where in my head a that time. I was also trying to get at moment that wowed you, like a game that took your favourite genre to another level (Sega Rally, Soul Calibre, Half life?) or just a moment of brilliant design. I've been thinking like a games are art fag for a while now and considering how the designers had tried to make you feel as you play. I think traditionally they have aimed at the frustrate you with a challenge and reward you with the satisfation of beating it. Which I do love, its still what games are all about but the last few years have seen games that have decent scripts and characterisation, something which was traditionally just an artbitary part of the game but I think add to the level of immersion the player experiences and give rise to moments like the horrible choice you face as Gordon Freeman, or some these other great moments you lot have mentioned.
@Scooter, I know what you mean about returning to a game and beating something that you never could before, maybe its becuase all the built up frustration has faded but I often find the best way to beat something is to leave it for a bit
