A few questions about a 40GB PS3.

I just won an auction for a 40GB PS3. It came to $70 after shipping, so I'm happy with the price. I was hoping it would be a backwards compatible model, but it's not a problem. I do have a few questions, though.

1. It did not include any accessories or cables. Will standard PS1 or PS2 cables work in it?

2. Because it didn't have any cables they (www.shopgoodwill.com) were unable to test it. Is there anything I should look out for when hooking it up that might signify a problem?

3. If it has a YLOD, what would be the best way to go about fixing that?

4. Can anyone recommend a good, but cheap, HDD to upgrade it with?

5. Is there anything I should know about this particular model?

I'll answer what I know for sure:

1. Yes as far as a/v cables go. For power, it uses the same kinda cord that computers and monitors use.

4. Just go on newegg and find a laptop SATA HDD with a good rating that fits your size needs and budget.

Uh okay, at that price it very likely is a YLOD. You can get any used PS1-PS2-PS3 Composite cable and a standard PC Power cord to confirm.

If the stickers on the console are not damaged, SONY will do a repair exchange for the exact same model or upgrade to Slim. The trade in has to be complete including the original hard drive. I think the upgrade to Slim exchange is cheaper and it comes with a bigger hard drive. In honesty, the Slims are known to be more reliable.

PS2 games are best going the HD route. A play of words either Hard Drive in a PS2 console or the newer PS3 High Definition re-releases.

In the description they said they just couldn't test it because they didn't have the A/V and power cables for it, but if I do need to exchange the PS3 I think I'll just upgrade to a slim since the 40GB model isn't backwards compatible, anyway. My PS2 still works like new, so it isn't an issue anyway. Out of curiosity, could anyone tell me about how much each option would cost?

Thank you! The auction was sitting at about 28 minutes remaining with a current bid of $49. I put in a bid of $51 and luckily no one else seemed interested. After the $19 shipping the total came to $70.05. On a funny note, while I was on the site I went to put a $7 bid on an Ipod Shuffle and forgot the period. Luckily customer service was kind enough to retract my $700 bid. You've really got to love shopgoodwill. Sorry for the long rant, I'm just excited. Thanks for all the help, everyone!

You were right, CRT. The PS3 arrived a few days ago and it does have the YLOD. I was about to contact Sony about it but while browsing Craigslist I stumbled upon an ad from a local guy who will fix broken consoles. He told me he can't give me any kind of guarantee, but he'll only charge me $25, so I'm happy either way. I'll let you know how the repair goes.

that sucks. I bought a 40gb PS3 last summer for $70 as well from a guy on s2ki.com (s2000 forum). He said it worked fine aside from it being unable to read discs. When I got it the first thing I did was enter into recovery mode and perform a complete restore. It's worked fine ever since! Slapped a 640gb HD in it and loaded up some custom firmware and have never been happier

I guess I got lucky. It's a shame he never tried recovery mode lol

I'm glad yours worked out well for you. I should have this one fixed in the next week. Since I hate the PS3 controller I just bought a PS2 to USB adapter for $4. So for about $100 shipped I'm happy with my purchase.

Oh Crap. Twenty Five dollars additional investment worth it if it gets repaired. Once the seal is broken Sony will not take it in for the service upgrade. Fingers crossed.
