I'm not going to argue that the Dreamcast is more powerful than the PS2, but I'd like to discuss the fact that the Dreamcast can hold its own.
To get us started, I found this interesting comparison of screenshots between Outrigger on the Dreamcast and Timesplitters on the PS2:

Here's another set comparing Soul Calibur on the DC to Tekken (also from Namco) and Dead or Alive 2 on the PS2

Any thoughts?
I know there are better comparisons out there, but can't dig them up just yet

Had to.
But actually, these were the more pointless pieces on the site. You can't compare console power by using different games.
Well,
The only games that are on PS2 and Dreamcast for side-by-side comparasons are extremely late life DC games and extremely early life PS2 games. Dreamcast really whips PS2 in this department do to the fact it's easy as hell to program for, uses Direct X and a version of windows CE, and most of them use the same models and textures meaning there isn't anything really the hardware can improve upon. I could get into the technical ins and outs, but waste of effort in my opnion.
Late life PS2 games i.e. current PS2 games blow anything Dreamcast away in every aspect. Now, we can look at another "simmilar" system v.s. system situation right now. The XBOX 360 games look no better then PS2 games except on large screen TV's do to the 1080i resolution. I think 360 games will blow PS2 games away at some point just like the PS2 did to the dreamcast. It's part of system evolution.

doa2 was out on the dc anyhow so why not use that? so here is a link discusing it. no screenhots tho

with regards to the ps2 looking like the 360 now i think someone needs to clean their glasses the xbox 1 is visualy superior to the ps2, and the 360 is much better than the xbox, however it is more difficult to see this as the xbox was about as good as you can really see on standard res tv. I do agree tho that atm PGR3 is not all that much nicer than PGR2 unless you see it in HD and then all becomes clear. After all 5.1 surround sound sounds crap via a regualr stereo tvs speakers

XBOX gets slaughtered by PS2 in effects do to it's processing power. XBox has better resolution and can push more polys but.. it can't even do 50% or more of the effects on PS2 never mind do them as well. PS2 / XBox games look as good as 360 games on a normal VGA monitor. I don't know how fiew xbox and ps2 games you've seen but nothing on xbox 360 except for mabey a fiew of the sports games really screams "next genoration game console". DOA ect.. don't look any better then their PS2 / XBoX counterparts.
i think we may just have to agree to disagree totally on this one then. I dont agree that the ps2 has a more powerfull cpu, they are totally different and based on real world game examples i cant see anything that sujects one being significantly better.
gfx wise, the ps2 looks really dated, not only are the polly counts lower but the texture resolution and overall screen res noticibly lower. Doa looks much different between the two in my opinion, but ive not seen the 360 one yet to comment on that, but the xbox version is so smooth i cant see how you would make it look much better.
I can assure you I have playied many games as to be almost unreal on both consoles, all i know is that up till 2003 i played pretty much every game released on both consoles with alot of jap (ps2) included. 150mbit uni link and working at a game store was not good for my uni studying
dont get me wrong i think the 360 is great, but to expect to be blown away i think you are expecting too much. just think 32x>saturn>psx>n64>dc>ps2>gc>xbox... (i donte rate the gc as better than the ps2 tho) there hasnt really been much of a leap has there, and now the games look rounded and not blocky there will be even less to tell the difference. But i have to say going from stereo regular tv to my mates 360 with hdtv and 5.1 it is much much better, even if i could have close to that with the xbox1 and to a lesser extent the ps2.
But Live for the 360 is a thing of evolutionary beuaty, i liked in the xbox1 and now it is amazing, i do think it is the way games will go, and sony have their work cut out as its where they need to get to. The only downside is the constant pc style patchs applied all the time, but with bb its only a few seconds each time. The way it all slots together is so smooth, it just fits... Its hard to emagin not having it once you finnish using it, and the physics seen on the games is alot better.
I dont think gfx are going to define this generation, but i think all the other technology is coming together to make this one good. More and more people will have 5.1 at some point soon, tv's will have hd, and people will have broadband, so even tho most of this was used in the last gen only now will people really use it and appreciate it and when they do they will be amazed at the difference... even if its always been there.
and now i am waaaay off topic, sorry all.

I think the Dreamcast will eventually become one of the more forgotten systems, unfortunately. Everyone will remember NES, GEN, SNES, N64.. but for some reason everyone is bound to have forgotten Sega Master System -- and I think the Dreamcast will suffer the same fate. Too many of the games have had sequels on other systems or have been ported and that makes the Dreamcast a whole lot less desirable.
Great screenshot comparisons, though. A few PS2 games really blow away anything the Dreamcast has to offer, but I never realized some of the games that can hold their own (IE Soul Calibur on Dreamcast .. WOW) really do look up to par with even a lot of today's PS2 games.

WOW, I duno if this is ranting, or trolling or both at once. So GC isn't better then PS2 it's just it's graphically better? Well, by that mind set the PS2 absolutely knocks the snot out of the xbox. The Xbox is not only a "dead" system do to the fact it's got the shiftiest sales of any of the post PlayStation 1 systems, the exclusive games made for the system are probably one of the worst line ups ever on any system. Fable and Ninja Gadien Black are the only two exclusive games that really are stand up, and Fable has been on PC forever now. The FACTS are the PS2 is superior effects wise, there is no real way to give "real world examples", but all the games that are worth mentioning for the PS2 effects wise would never run on a Xbox (Xeno Saga, Digital Devil Saga, Metal Gear Solid 3). I don't mean to disappoint you as far as wanting to suck the game cube's dick as being a graphically superior system to the PS2, because I do love my gamecube.. but we do have a very nice example of a "side by side" game comparison, and you can go to any review site and see that Resident Evil 4 for GC gets killed by Resident Evil 4 for PS2. The PS2 really only hurts resolution wise v.s. the Xbox, and only people with HDTV's are going to notice. However, anyone who owns a system will notice how the PS2's game library kicks the XBox's teeth out of its head and hands them back.
The only conclusion any reasonable person can draw, i.e. over the age of 18, possibly 21.. is all the systems are pretty great in some department. PS2 has great rpgs, Gamecube has the best action / adventure and XBox is the best to mod.

Don't forget... XBOX has the best audio as well out of those 3.
But that can be considered like resolution... only people with good processors/receivers will notice it, but hey I REALLY hate it when even with the optical SPDIF out on my PS2 still only spits out STEREO! of all things to my 7.1 Pioneer Elite THX Receiver... luckily it reencodes it to ProLogicII. Still I'd prefer true 5.1 out of the thing.... and this includes DVDs!!!!!!!!
Oh and you forgot Panzer Dragoon Orta! GRRRRRRRRR and a much better version of Silent Hill 2.

No, Dreamcast is not quite as powerful as the PS2, but I'd rather look at a lot more DC games than PS2 titles...the color is just so vibrant. On the DOA2 front, the PS2 version was clearly the inferior one, being that the Dreamcast got a much more direct Naomi port. Most titles on DC that made their way to PS2 do look greater on DC, primarily because of the Naomi based hardware that PS2 couldn't as easily mimic. Crazy Taxi, Ecco, SC5,...all display jaggies and washed out colors abound on the PS2.
It's interesting to think of what the more capable developers would have been able to do with a few more years on Dreamcast. Soul Calibur, a launch game, I think is even comparable to a few of the less impressive 360 titles. Best looking DC games? The aforementioned Soul Calibur, Ecco, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Shenmue II, Alien Front, Skies of Arcadia, Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adv. 2, HotD2, DoA 2, Zombie Revenge, Capcom vs. SNK 2 (lots of "two's"), F355 and Grandia, um,2.
