best snes Donkey Kong Country
Shigeru said the same thing about Donkey Kong and then went back on his opinion in the following years after its release. But seriously, I don't see how it's any less of a platformer than Super Mario World or any other platformer that was highly acclaimed. Of course, if you take away the "graphics" you're going to be left with a shell of a game with no visual flare, but the same could be said for a lot of games. Maybe it DID have an influence because of its graphics, but overall, the production value of that series is still high and it has atmosphere, great level design and music you won't find anywhere else...not to mention it stood the test of time pretty well and anyone could still play it today without feeling like they're playing a broken game from the SNES era.
I personally love the majority of rare games on the n64 including diddy kong racing. Sure the majority of them are just ripping ideas off of Nintendo but they generally improve ideas like with Banjo Kazooie.aaron wrote:kinda like most rare games.dudex77 wrote:I don't remember what number it was but the one with pirates. By the way Donkey Kong Country actually sucks. The only reason it was popular back in the day was because the graphics were cool. If you actually play it and aren't thinking "it's nintendo and a classic so it's good" you'll see it's a mediocre platformer.
@Gamerforlife Shenmue is awesome but only for the sake of it being such a cool world and being able to interact with everything. If you are looking for a game with good gameplay it's not it, it's more like an interactive movie.

Now see, I have no problem with someone telling me they love Shenmue for exactly the reason you stated. I just dislike how Shenmue fans blatantly lie and say that it had great gameplay. It's the same thing with Odin Sphere. If you loved the story and graphics, fine. I'm cool with it, but the gameplay had a shallow combat system and re-uses the same levels and enemies over and over again. Odin Sphere's ONLY strengths are clearly its aestethic value and its story and I just wish people would just admit that.dudex77 wrote:I personally love the majority of rare games on the n64 including diddy kong racing. But those are just one man's opinions, and I guess everyone is entitled to their own

Gameplay really makes or breaks a game for me, with very few exceptions. It's a bit strange to me that people can enjoy a game that places all of its emphasis on story and graphics and little else. That's why I just don't get games like Shenmue(where you mostly walk around and talk to people all day)or Odin Sphere(that has a combat system that doesn't even stand up to some games from the 16-bit era)
Fair enough then. Have you played shenmuee 2? It actually has decent game play and isn't just interesting. The thing with shenmue is that it was supposed to be like 10 games so the first was just to set the story and the rest were where the action comes in. Do you like any RPG's then? I don't think any RPG's with exception for Grandia have ever really had good gameplayGamerforlife wrote:Gameplay really makes or breaks a game for me, with very few exceptions. I'd be willing to give Shenmue 2 a shot one of these days. I did finish the original(I will rarely bash a game without having played through it first), so I guess it wouldn't hurt to see how the story plays out.dudex77 wrote:Fair enough then. I actually do like rpgs, I think some of them actually do have great gameplay. The amount of strategy and planning that goes into some of them is great. Plus, I love combat systems like the ones in Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story or Paper Mario that require timing, memory and proper reflexes. Grandia does actually have my favorite combat system though, since you mentioned it.
The thing about the original shenmue is that, even on just story alone, it doesn't match up to most rpgs. Even if you compare it to another episodic series like Xenosaga, there's a lot more story going on in ep 1 of Xenosaga than Shenmue. I'm still a big believer that Shenmue only got so much attention because of who its creator was and the hype. One day I'll try Shenmue 2 though, just so I can say I gave the series in its entirety a fair shot.
