Best Japanese Import GCN Games

Post by paulkhanti »

So, are there a lot of games that are Japanese imports only for the Gamecube that are worth playing? I've been into Japanese-only imports for a while on other systems, but after seeing Giftpia, I wondered if there are any other Gamecube games worth playing that are import-only. If there's already a thread or article on racketboy about this, feel free to redirect me :D

One I consider an obscure "Import", but another on the way from PAL land. I reviewed other obscure Gamecube and Wii games in the link. Eventually I'll review the Hudson series there.

About the only GameCube game worth importing from Japan is Nintendo Puzzle Collection, written in katakana. NPC contains six games: Dr. Mario 64, a GameCube remake of Yoshi's Cookie and a GameCube remake of the original, extrmely girly (but awesome) Panel De Pon. It also includes the NES versions of Dr. Mario, Yoshi's Cookie and a skimmed down SFC port of Panel De Pon. THe original versions are available to download to a GameBoy Advance via the transfer cable, meaning you can play them for as long as you want until you turn off the power. It's a kind of useless feature, but it's still very cool.

Dr. Mario is always fun, and Yoshi's Cookie is a forgotten puzzle classic. The real star of the show is of course the excellent Panel De Pon. Bringing everything from the N64 Pokemon Puzzle League except the Pokemon branding, if you love puzzlers you must not pass up this import.

Keeeeeeeeeep in mind that you'll need either a region free modded GameCube or a freeloader device to play Japanese GameCube games.

Ah, I've heard of Nintendo Puzzle Collection, but I'll have to look into those fighting games. Dream Mix TV World Fighters looks awesome! Fighters are my favorite genre, so kudos for those! 8)

I've heard of the game before, but never looked into it much, kinda cause I looked at the cover and the shallowness inside me told me to avoid it :P Supposedly it's supposed to be a lot like Spore? Or at least from what I've heard. I'll have to look into it now, thanks! Reading the post you directed me to as we speak 8)

I've never gotten a chance to play that comp, nor have I even gotten a chance to play Dr. Mario 64 :P I do enjoy puzzlers as well, so I'll have to look into it sometime!

I would also suggest the Hudson Select Volumes. 2.5d remakes of some of their classic titles:

This. In particular, I highly recommend the Star Soldier remake. In my opinion, it's the best SHMUP on the Gamecube. There are quite a number of good SHMUPs for the 'Cube, but almost all of them are import-only.

Another vote for nintendo puzzle collection. It's the only way to play 4-player panel de pon/tetris attack/puzzle league.

I think it might be the only way to play yoshi's cookie 4-player too, but, well, it's yoshi's cookie. Not horrible but not amazing.

Cell + barrier attack = CHAMPION!

Best stage in the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnQ9ca7KbzA

If you're not sick of fighter suggestions, you might want to check Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY8NYFoo8Os

Donkey Konga 3 also has an "interesting" song selection, if you'd like to mash some bongos. ;)

I'll also throw in another vote for NPC, awesome game. Great idea for a topic, I'd be interested in finding out more about what GCN's imports have to offer.

Shikigami no Shiro II
It's a fantastic bullet hell shmup with an extremely unique art direction.
