I'm really not interested in touching it again. Not for a long time. It needs a lot of work. There are others on that forum having issues too. I'm not the only one. It seems even when it boots properly, it has a ton of incompatibilities with other homebrew.

I would be interested in this, how do you get the flash program to work on the PS2? Do you burn it to a dvd? My PS2 can run backups, but not stuff from the USB port, I thought that was the whole point of this.

Holy....looks like theu redeemed themselves. It was updated quite a few times in the past few days. I wasn't going to be touching it anytime soon, but when I read the changes, I had to give it another shit. Basically, the entire installation process? Gone. Don't need it. FreeVast is now a self contained ELF file. All you do is run it on the PS2, with a memory card inserted. Press X. It does the entire thing locally, all by itself. And it actually works now. It boots right to uLaunchElf strait from the memory card. I no longer need my swap magic disc inserted, or my thumb drive inserted. I then boot HDL, and I'm playing games.

Now the real question is: how do you play copied games on discs and not just the HDD? My friend badly wants to know, lol. Someone said to enable Disc Control in ULE, but as others report, the very second you do that, it locks up, and kills the entire tool until you can get back in there by other means and unflip Disc Control and save it again.

Edit: Ok it seems that some PAL users can access the disc drive, but so far I see no NTSC users able to. Something about this method is locking up the disc drive on American consoles. Hope they can fix it. Until then, no playing backups, unless you have the means to play them off the hard drive.

PS2 doesn't work with SATA hard drives...

Anyways, this morning's update made a lot of progress again. Now I am able to boot backup discs, but only with a retail game inserted, power on, Disc Control enabled in ULE (it doesnt freeze anymore!), then I boot cogswap.elf, scan the disc, then swap to copied game and boot it. Lid switch needs to be rigged though, which means console must be opened if you dont have swap magic pieces. There are however users of fat model american PS2s claiming they can no boot copies without going through all this. So it's likely that this is just another fixable issue.

meaning that i'd still need to do the knife trick and that my swap magic is now worthless.

I installed it on my friend's v14 slim today. Hes really happy. I set him up with a few copied ps1 and ps2 games as a start. He's broke as fuck and never buys games anyway, so this isnt harming the industry. I installed the exploit. copied cogswap and psxlauncher to the mem card (about 70kb each), renamed them, hotkeyed theme to the main menu of ULE (L1/R1 for PS1 copies, L2/R2 for PS2 copies) and he was good to go. Completely newbie friendly solution. He's using FFTactics and Def Jam New York (TOC: 4.37GB!) as trigger discs.

Did notice one oddity though. Soul Calibur 3 turns completely japanese using this exploit. Normally it's english. A lot of people are claiming their games are detecting the console region wrong and turning german and spanish and shit. Hope this issue will be fixed. SC3 is still in english when I used swap magic.

Um...I'm under the impression that the installation process actually needs to be done on the intended console itself, because it extracts some information on it to make the exploit work. Am I wrong? I'm not really sure.

I'm kinda lost here, I downloaded the files, my ps2 can read games on DVD-R, but how do I get the .ELF file to run on my PS2, do I have to burn it via special means?
