I'm in the same boat as o.pwuaioc though. The Mario RPGs just do nothing for me. I think the main problem is that I just don't really like the Mario franchise. I can enjoy the NES and SNES ones as much as the next guy, but none of the post-SNES Mario games appeal to me. I have the same opinion on pretty much every first party Nintendo franchise however.
What RPG are you playing right now?

Re: What RPG are you playing right now?
I think one of my favorite things about SMRPG was that it didn't follow the Mario mold. Mallow, Geno, Smithy, Culex... it had a lot of new characters, and rocking a team of Mario, Peach, and Bowser was just unreal to me as a kid.
That the game actually had side secrets and a boss harder than the last boss really sold me. This would be a formula that I would look for in most rpgs after this (this was my first non-pokemon rpg)
I actually quite liked Nintendo's first party games in the SNES era. I think this is when they had perfected their formula's, but before they started to milk the crap out of their best franchises.
I would not even compare the later mario rpgs to SMRPG. Those games do nothing to set themsevles apart from the rest of the mario franchise, and instead cash in on a gimmick.
SMRPG is not perfect, but it did a lot right. So many weapons for each character (including ultimate weapons for each), and a nice difficulty curve. The game isn't too long either, which isn't a bad thing. the music was pretty sweet, the graphics were very nice at the time.
I guess I can put myself in the shoes of another and see why some might not like this game, but it really is a fun, well-rounded game.
On a side note, I may be biased, as I quite enjoyed the original SMB games, SMW, SMW2, Mario Kart, Galaxy, etc.
I don't love the character, but I love the games he is in.
Oh, and I still need to get started on that IV playthrough. It was probably my least favorite in the series (which I count from 4-10) aside maybe 8, but seeing the love it gets here, I really want to give it another shot. Nothing wrong with loving yet another game

Damn, I got to replay SMRPG sometime. It's been soooo long. All I remember besides Mario Characters and Mallow is that "Power Rangers"-esque fight.
I did play Partners in Time a few months ago. I was hooked until I beat it. I think liking Game and Watch games contributed to my enjoyment though (not everyone's cup o tea, I'm sure)

Just remembered I a strategy game I loved playing as a kid was Genghis Khan on the NES.
And then I spent 6 hours playing it on Sunday in front of what eventually was two football games.

Well I was gonna start Dragon Quest IV on my DS, until my wife said "Don't start any new games, I got you a 3DS and a game for Christmas!" Well okay then.

I really hate how Miyamoto hates Luigi. Absent from both Super Mario RPG and Super Mario 64...what's he got against the big green guy anyway?dunpeal2064 wrote:I think one of my favorite things about SMRPG was that it didn't follow the Mario mold. As the comic says, "It sucks to be Weegie".

I still root for the guy. I think he's getting a Luigi's Mansion sequel at least.

Holy crap what were they thinking with the control of the Mako in Mass Effect? It is like trying to drive a balloon with a hair dryer.

I agree, Luigi should have been.in smrpg.
There is the gba/ds series Mario & Luigi rpgs. They were fairly fun.

Yeah, it's the most reviled part of the first game. They take it out in the second in favor of a tedious minigame. But at least the minigame is easy to control.Hobie-wan wrote:Holy crap what were they thinking with the control of the Mako in Mass Effect?
