And by draggy, I mean it feels like the d-pad controls a string attached to the space ship instead of the space ship. You start moving right, let go, and then inertia forces you to keep slowly moving right. Here's an example:
A while back, when I had a PSP, I got A Space Ship Shooter for Two Bucks, thinking it would be a semi-pleasant experience, especially for the obvious price mark. I liked the general style, but once I took control of the ship, it felt just like how I described: like you're moving a sting attached to the ship. It ruined the game for me. I couldn't dodge bullet patterns the way I usually do. I just didn't like it.
I could label myself a shmup enthusiast, but I'm certainly no expert by ANY means. This problem still bugged me. Is there an appeal to this type of control? Is anyone not bothered by this as much as I am?

Re: Shmups with "draggy" controls
Tight controls are a must for me to really get into a shmup.
Re: Shmups with "draggy" controls
If a shmup doesn't have tight control, then it isn't a shmup! No question.
However, I have not had any real issues with poor-controlling shmups off the top of my head.

Making a shmup with bad controls would be like making a platformer and forgetting to put platforms in it. You could not possibly make a bigger mistake.

Those are rail shooters, not shmups.AppleQueso wrote:Don't the Panzer Dragoon things kinda do this?

I know, but it's a sister-genre of sorts and I thought It'd be relevant to bring it up.

Well, Asteroids would probably be the progenitor here. Other examples would be Solar Jetman and Subterranea.

Sort of, but Panzer Dragoon focuses more on annihilating enemies than dodging bullets. This would be an issue if you were forced to dodge heavy patterns of bullets. It also focused on the distractingly beautiful scenery. I love that game!!AppleQueso wrote:Don't the Panzer Dragoon things kinda do this?
