Gotta love a game that starts in "Podunk, USA".
And of course, if you like that, Secret of Mana is a must (if you haven't played it).

I'm trying to plau Ultima IV, via the Xu4 upgrade. Still a little hardcore for me though. My Laziness of not wanting to take notes for EVERYTHING really gets in the way.
Thinking of using tile-based maps to guide me everywhere.

I've heard a lot of good things about Secret of Mana, and it's definitely a game I'm gonna try soon. I've never really "delved" into RPG's (although I'm attempting to right now), so a lot of the more known games are games that I still have yet to play.

The games share the same combat system pretty much, so yeah you'd probably love it then. You get three characters in SoM though. SoE is a bit more polished and smoother, with the cool crafting system, but SoM has a lot of magic and stuff.

I love SoE but never think much of its goofy story, the atmosphere is amazing though. But yeah I'd definitely say SoM and Seiken Densetsu 3 have way better stories and are a bit longer. As much as I love SoE's music too, SoM/SD3's OST's are on another level.

You are on the brink of a vast world then.

I consider those 2 games to be Action RPGs though. And yes, I am aware that there's a whole topic devoted to RPG vs ARPG.
But I was 1st introduced to and liked the ARPG genre. And I'm positive that those 2 games would have fit the mold for me, well before I got into the more traditional RPGs.

I would just be cautious of any game that doesn't let you actively control your character until you know if it's your thing.

Mana are Evermore are both awesome, and very different games despite their initial combat and interface similarities.

Mana, Evermore, and SD3 are all essential 16-bit ARPGs.

Ah, I do realize the whole ARPG v. RPG aspect, and I've played games like FF Trilogy and Saga Frontier. I still consider ARPG's to be RPG's, and I don't really distinguish the two :P However, I will admit I'm drawn more to Action RPG's than I am traditional RPG's, and I hope I can get more into traditional RPG's with time :P

Super Mario RPG finally gained some respect from me. My girlfriend came to this boss and all of a sudden I heard Final Fantasy IV boss theme music. +1 Square, +1.

Ooh, the sounds are even similar to FFIV! You just got yourself another point, Square! +2

That's him. Too bad it wasn't an actual FFIV character, although the four crystals are a direct reference.

Right before meeting up with this guy, my gf also fought a tiny mage, another reference.
