Random Thoughts Thread
Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I like AVGN for what it's worth. The videos have undeniably took a big drop in quality, and needless to say his opinions aren't to be taken seriously in the slightest, but I've found a lot of his videos to be pretty hilarious. The Halloween one and the Battletoads one stick out in particular.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
I'm actually surprised to see how much criticism James gets here, as I guess I naively believed he was universally adored by retro gamers.
I watch a lot of video game reviews from all sorts of people: the “famous” ones, random ones I find on YouTube, personal friends of mine, etc. Unfortunately, I tend to dislike most of these reviews. The problem with most reviewers is that they either 1) overact by talking too loud/fast, over-enunciating everything, looking and sounding incredibly unnatural and/or 2) act like creepy neckbeards holed up in a basement hoping to impressive people by strategically positioning their camera in front of a wall of CIB Saturn games and constantly “unboxing” weird shit like Casio Loopys. James doesn't fall into these categories, I like him because he comes across as a regular guy that likes games. He's passionate and knowledgeable without ever crossing the line into creepy/obsessive territory. His collection looks like mine, authentic and worn and well-loved throughout the years. Contrast this to someone like the Irate Gamer, who has a bunch of pristine ebay items hoping people will notice and think he's a real gamer, but I digress...
And I like James' humor and the AVGN character. Call it immaturity or silliness, but I think the “buffalo takin' a shit” type jokes are hilarious. Though I still think his best jokes are those Seinfeldian observations (“Who would call Dracula my man?” / “This is the kind of music that plays when someone slips on a banana peel”).
That said, James is at his best when he's alone. The guest characters usually don't add much, though I do like Mike Matai at times, and I dug the Glitch Gremlin and the Ninja. The special effects need to go, they just feel like padding. My favorite videos are the ones were James simply plays a game and dissects it: Dark Castle, Action 52, Superman 64, Castlevania. Sometimes he simply gets too ambitious and that's when he falls flat.
I agree that Cinemassacre has become kind of lackluster lately. It seems like James/Mike feel obligated to post something new every 1-3 days, so we're getting a lot of shit that seems pretty desperate. I don't really need to see James' childhood comics. I'd rather see one quality video once every two weeks, not a bunch of half-assed ones coming out every few days.
And quite frankly, I'm not too stoked about this movie. I'd enjoy a two-hour AVGN episode where he covers a bunch of games, but instead we're getting some kind of Wayne's World knock-off. No thanks.
I am optimistic about this new episode, as the first two Bible Games ones were solid, but I'll have to wait until tonight to watch it.
tl;dr I like James a lot, but I can see where you guys are coming from.

Re: Random Thoughts Thread
that's fine, Bone. No knock on yr taste or whatever. The few AVGN episodes I've watched, I felt like the "comedy" relied too much on "this game is a game we all know is really difficult, so I'm going to cuss at it." Which just isn't that funny to me. Maybe I've watched the wrong episodes, but as I said I really don't like spending my time watching game videos. I'll listen to podcasts on my commute, but if I'm home I'd rather play a game than watch one.

Honestly, some of his best work is when he reminisces about games he actually liked (Castlevania).

I don't like AVGN either, but that's probably because I don't like video reviews of any sort.

Thanks for the support a few posts back fellas, about the whole drinking thing.
The first day wasn't too bad, but today is pretty rough. Got 3 hours of sleep tops last night and kept waking up from nightmares and cold sweats. Been pretty depressed and very irritable today, ready to lash out at the drop of a hat. Feeling nauseated on and off too and go from freezing cold to way too warm. No severe withdrawals yet, just feeling real shitty.
The worst part about it all, is that everyone that chooses to abuse alcohol has a reason for doing so, the alcohol itself can't be blamed. I'm going to have to confront my issues eventually, and every minute I'm sober I just think about it more and more. On top of everything, I get absolutely horrible seasonal depression in the Winter months, and here in Upstate NY, Winter is just starting to pick up. Damn, I need a drin... oh wait...

I don't know if some one already mentioned, I know Luke said you should see a doctor, but you should consider getting some type of help. And I'm not saying AA per se, but I'm sure there's programs out there that are more 1 on 1 that can help you. I have a friend that's a social worker, maybe he can get you info on something in your area. If you want, just let me know and I'll ask him.

I listen to music while I work since I only talk to customers occasionally. I seem to have a knack of pausing in the last 30 seconds of an album so I get off the phone with someone, only to resume the music as it fades out to finish.
