Convex or Concave buttons preferences?

Post by gradualmeltdown »

Hey racketboy fighters got a question for you about button preferences.

I am fixing up a Capcom QSound cabinet and making it minty mint. Got the 18-1 Capcom chinese mutant PCB running great. It is a CPS2 B board with the legit ROMS for the games, from some crazy territories, but all legit original CPS2 code on real hardware. Now that I am almost done all I need to do is select which sticks and buttons to install. Going American style for the stick because personally my execution on CPS2 era games is just better with them from experience. When it comes to buttons I'm not so sure.

The original machines had concave buttons in America and I worked really hard to get NOS stickers, CPO, and just about everything else. For that reason I kind of want to use concave buttons. They are the OG parts for the American fighting game freak.

However since playing with Japanese style controls since SF3 days I completely love convex buttons. They let you slide you fingers more easily and simply seem more responsive especially the higher quality parts. Playing with my Madcatz TE stick on modern fighting games has been awesome, plinking and double tapping multiple buttons to increase execution is now habit.

What do you guys think? Which do you like best and why? I am totally open to either option as the machine is going to be awesome either way!

I'm a far bigger fan of convex buttons myself, especially for 6 button games. I say if you want to keep the original holes in the CP, just get the convex HAPP buttons, that way they look more like the original style of the cabinet but they're not concave. My local arcade does this on several games. It would be awfully hard to get 30mm buttons mounted properly in a wood CP anyway since they're normally intended for thinner metal control pannels. I'd personally go with convex HAPP's in you situation.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.

CONVEX
I modded my Zaxxon Arcade controller with additional buttons. The HAPP CONCAVE buttons were less costly so I bought them. Side be Side both buttons work well. I do like the Convex push button which is taller and more traditional of older Arcade Cabinets. The shorter throw Concave buttons might offer better speed for Fighter games. A good point also where one has to slide quickly between buttons.

Mix them up?
A mix of buttons may not match but in function might work. Since the main fire button is convex, it feels natural to be the primary button. A fighting game really has no primary button, but for other genres this could be a consideration.

Game Pad - Obligatory mention
I like the dished in plastic to sticks better then the rubber domed ones. This is mainly because of durability, the rubber cap sometimes peels off. Well there is also the PSX DUAL ANALOG controller too. :D

Convex!

The Happs Competition will do the trick (I assume the cab is wood?). You can prolly make a Sanwa/Seimitsu fit or get those screw-ins, but they cost more.

You cannot for about the scrubs! Concave hurts their hands :)

For me it's always flat buttons. Perfectly flat buttons on a perfectly flat surface.

But that's my gamepad...can't afford a nice arcade stick, lol. But gamepads really are underrated. My BlazBlue chops are pretty good without one.
