I hear people complaining about spending $40 for an American 3DS game. That sounds super cheap to me.
You clearly speak English and live in the states, so why are you buying only Japanese games?
I tend to buy Japanese only if the game was exclusive to that region (Sailor Moon games), different and/or superior to the American version (Final Fantasy IV), or cheaper (SNES and Saturn RPGs, PC Engine games).
I generally try to buy North American when possible, as my English is better than my Japanese (understatement of the century).
I think people forget that videogames cost the same amount 20 years ago. You would buy a new Tommy Lasorda baseball and it would be $60...in 1989 (or whenver). This market price point isn't anything new.
With the slew of titles out this fall (and maybe I just didn't pay as close attention in years past), all you needed to do was wait a couple of weeks and Rayman and Sonic were $20 less. As a previous poster mentioned, it's all a supply and demand thing.
mj kind of touched on the quick price-drop thing in the budget fight club thread. Seeing as how Tekken Hybrid was released this month at $40, I'm curious how quickly it's retail will dip below $30. What do you think? February?
2012 seems like the year to get a bunch of launch titles for me,Ive got lollipop chainsaw,FFXIII-2,Anarchy Reigns,Binary Domain,FC3 and Bioshock Infinite as day one buys for me.But as for quick price drops the last quick one Ive seen was Shadows of the Damned, went down to 39.99 pretty quickly due to sales I believe. But yea the longer I think we wait to buy the quicker the price may go down especially if sales were predicted to do better.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

I generally used $40 as my price-point in 2011. The only game I can think of I bought day one that was more was Catherine. (And my wife bought me MvC3 while it was still $50ish). But all the other new releases I bought this year I waited for them to hit $40.

And with several SNES games they cost more. I remember some new releases costing $70 or $80 because of the special expansion chips in the carts. Now add 20 years of inflation. Games these days are downright cheap compared to in days of yore.

I try to wait until games are $19.99 new. A couple companies fuck this all up though. Prices of first party Nintendo games never seem to come down. And Atlus and NIS games are sometimes released in such limited quantities that you're forced to pay launch price or wait until it's $80 on ebay (ie: Ar tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel).

I prefer games made by Japanese people, and the original Japanese versions are usually superior to the American versions. I want the best version of the game, so I seek out the Japanese versions.
For example, the Japanese version of Mario Kart 7 has the correct names for the characters. That's important to me.

The Nintendo stuff doesn't go down because of the ridiculous tail their games have. Nintendo doesn't do all their sales in the first month; it's much more evenly spread over a multi-year cycle. I think it really speaks to the quality and universal appeal of their games.

What about American games released in Japan? Do you get the original American version, or opt for the Japanese in that case as well?
