i just got a fresh new copy of SNK 2...awesome game, horrible button layout.

I once saw what looked like a sega saturn controller but was used for the dreamcast...my question...HOW?!?

Its a pain i nthe arse trying to fight and having to use those triggers...can someone please tell me what you need to run a 6 button pad controller?

Then you're gonna be out of luck as far as quality 3rd party controllers go. There are a few out there with a 3 over 3 config on the face buttons. One by Mad-catz comes to mind. It got terrible reviews for it's analogue stick but I don't recall it being commended on the quality of it's d-pad either...

Other than modding an official controller I can't think of anything else to do...

The DC uses a maple-bus (like USB) to determine what button is being pressed at a certain time rather than the standard ground array 'normal' controllers used (ie all buttons are live until a ground is connected effectively shorting the connection). I'm not sure you can just wire up, say a Megadrive 6button pad to wire and have it work.

That was the same question I had myself when I started hacking the controller. I think it would be harder to figure this out if I was hacking a sega controller because its very different from the Interact controller I hacked. The L and R triggers have 3 wires. 1 is the ground (its in the middle of the three). When the trigger is pulled it makes contact with the first wire. As its pulled all the way down it contacts the third wire. At first I thought I could just elminate the top wire but I finnaly realised I had to hook up all 3 wires to the arcade button. An Arcade button has 2 posts (and a ground post). 1 is normally closed (NC) and the other is normally open(NO). So when those wires are hooked up, and the ground wire is hooked up to its post - then it all works.

If anyone decides to hack a dreamcast controller heed this warning. DONT CUT OFF THE JOYSTICK. I thought I wouldnt need it but if its cut off then everything else doesnt work. So I hacked 2 controllers cause I broke all the soldering spots on the first one.

There was an ASCII fighting pad for the Dreamcast, but it's a bit hard to find. I lucked into one at a local game store, before they all went belly up. Check eBay.

I'll tell you what brother, I feel your pain. I can't play any of them fighters with a DC pad. Using the triggers for anything in a fighting game is a terrible joke and the d-pad is a fucking nightmare.

I want to warn you to NOT get the DC quantum fighter 6 button pad. It is similar to the original shape only with the c and z buttons on the face. I purchased one, only to find out that the extra face buttons control x and a buttons and cannot be programmed to activate the triggers. What a waste and insult to consumers (ITS CALLED A FIGHTER PAD>???!!!!!!).

Anyways, the total control DC to Saturn converter is the way to go. I use one for all of my fighters on DC and it almost feels natural... almost, but not completely. Something feels off about the d-pad, IMO. Anyone else feel that? Also it never reads my VMU, but maybe that is because the battery needs to be replaced in my VMU, and the total control doesn't power it for some reason. Not sure.

I heard those ASCII pads are trash and somewhat rare, but I will probably eventually have one of each of the SNK and Capcom versions.

Oh yeah and the converters are a ripoff, plus you have to buy a Saturn controller.

WTF was SEGA thinking releasing all of them classics on a TRASH gamming pad?!

Yeah, i think its come down to me getting an arcade pad honestly and just getting used to play on top a table/ my lap. They are easy to find...just a bit pricy.

i have an adapter for playin Saturn pads on my DC and it works fine, no lag as far as I can see...

I think I read somewhere that the Saturn-DC converter does have input lag, but it's very minimal; like one extra frame for a response: ex. Super Street Fighter II Turbo's button input registers about 4 frames of animation after the button is pushed, so it's about 1/15 of a second in real time; the converter would make that about 5 frames after the button is pressed; very, very few people would actually notice this without some kind of testing.
