And the result? A partnership with gamestop to release the game with a minimum of financial risk for Nintendo.
This is not the first time something like this has happened. In the mid 90's Capcom took a similar stand with Megaman 6. They insisted releasing it in America made no sense: The SNES was out and they felt the odds of losing money were too great. So Nintendo stepped in and handled distribution duties, assuming some of the risk in return for a larger cut of the potential profits, which was like double dipping, given Nintendo's nigh-draconian licensing agreements at the time.
Back then, Nintendo was the evil empire. My point is that sometimes the Evil Empire does something that is a net good for all.
