Dreamcast: Mod Chips or Bootdiscs?
I recently bought a Dreamcast and have been trying to play a piece of homebrew I burned to a disc but it wouldn't boot. I tried using Utopia Bootdisk but it didn't boot to that either. I want to know whether I'll have to insert a Modchip or whether their is any Bootdisks that will work. Please help me!

you should be able to just used a burned cd without the need for modchips or bootdiscs. might be worth having a look at this article

I use the DC-X boot disc to load up my import copy of DDR 2nd Mix. Also works for my Dream Explorer ISO CD. Very easy to use. Look for DC-X

There's a chance that the homebrew you downloaded isn't working. I've downloaded a NeoGeo CD game that was suppose to be ready to burn and play on a Dreamcast, but it wouldn't work. It was just a bad image, not that my Dreamcast wouldn't boot it.
Here's the thing about mod chips for the Dreamcast: All they did was allow you to boot other region discs. Even if you happen to find one (they're not easy to find these days) it wont help boot your homebrew disc. That being said, if a boot disk didn't help either, then you probably just have a bad image (unless it's a bad burn).
These days, pretty much everything you'll download for the Dreamcast will be self bootable. Meaning that you wont need a boot disk.
There's also the fact/rumor that late model Dreamcasts wont boot CD-R's. I think there's a guide out there some where on the web that will tell you how to determine which model DC you have (revision numbers or dates on the bottom label, I think). Maybe some one has a link for that handy.

The tutorial didn't help much but It made me realise that I may have a bad copy of 'BoR collection Vol 1' as Daemon tools wouldn't play it. I also think my dreamcast is one of the 'revised' models though as it has a 1 on the bottom and I heard that if it had a 1 or a 2 on the bottom it wouldn't boot from a burned CD-R.
