I have over 200 disc-based games (PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2) and over 200 music CDs. I have only ever found disc rot in TWO CDs out of the 4-5 hundred I own and both were music CDs.
I'd say it's not proving to be as big an issue as some once thought.

Re: Worth buying PSONE?
I don't have an exact number, like Reprise. But I also own a lot of disc-based games dating back to the Sega CD. And I don't have 1 disc that has disc rot. I'd be more worried about the systems themselves dying before I would disc rot.
As for the games themselves being worth it, yeah, for sure. If you like classic games, then PS1 is one of the best systems you can get. Great, varied library of games and many of them are common and cheap. It's a fun system to collect for, too, since PS1 games are still easily found "in the wild", and often with their complete cases and artwork since they used jewel-cases.
Seems like you already know some of the best ones since you're first 2 picks are Parasite Eve and Silent Hill. The Resident Evil games are must haves too, when it comes to horror games. IMO, RE 1-3 are the best horror games on PS1.

I've got about 400 optical disc based games, music, video.
No disc rot

Re: Worth buying PSONE?
I lost a couple dozen audio CDs to disc rot.
I realized, too late, that the CD binder I had my CDs in was apparently simultaneously rubbing the label side and trapping moisture. My discs got so many pinholes.

CD binders are the devil. If grit or something gets in there with the discs and rubs around, they're screwed since it is all pressed together.Zing wrote:CD binder I had my CDs in was apparently simultaneously rubbing the label side and trapping moisture. My discs got so many pinholes.

That's not disc rot, that's just plain damage.Zing wrote:I lost a couple dozen audio CDs to disc rot.

Another thing I hate is when CDs aren't packaged in regular jewel cases (where the disc is raised), but in some sort of plastic sleeve instead. Sure it might look a bit more unique, but the discs get scratched very easy, probably by near-microscopic grit. I examined all of my CDs last summer and nearly every disc in a sleeve needed to get resurfaced.

Re: Worth buying PSONE?
^^^ I hear you I can't stand "sleeves." When I was a teen (A long time ago, in the 90s!!) I had a CD collection of around 200. That was impressive back then because CDs around my town were about $20 a piece with tax. This was before CD burners and MP3s. Being the smart guy I was I bought one of those CD books that held over 200 CDs and surely enough they all got scratched up.
A couple years ago I had to go back and start my CD collection over. I refuse to settle for MP3s, I feel like I don't own anything. I like having the case and artwork. Does that make me weird?

They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.

Re: Worth buying PSONE?
I had a soft spot for the liner notes and original jewel cases. However, after many years, I realized that I never actually looked at them after the first few days of ownership. So, a couple years ago, I went through and scanned every CD cover. I then ripped every CD to lossless format. The CD collection was sold off. Well, only 2/3 of it actually sold.
I still firmly believe in the physical medium, so anytime I buy new music, I buy the original CD, used. I then scan and rip, then put it on the shelf. I may do another big sell-off someday, but for now, I am regretting what I have already sold. Not enough to buy it all back, though.
