Love the original Series, LOVE Next Gen, used to love Voyager until I watched it all (painful... painful memories there) and I didn't like Deep Space Nine.
My problem with DS9 was that it was very un-Trek for me. Well, maybe it was too Trek, and because of that, it didn't work. Whatever, my problem was that since it was a space station, there was no 'trekking' involved. They stayed in one spot, complained that Quark was farting in the promenade, O'Brien messed up a transporter that was gonna blow up the station but then they hit the reset button and everyone was safe. Next episode, rinse, repeat.
BUT - I was also told that after Babylon 5 came on the scene and was kicking DS9's caboose all over the place with it's long story arcs, DS9 decided to step up their game.
My request for help lies here. I want to watch DS9 on Netflix before they remove it (and you know they will), and because of this I want to start where the show got 'good'. A buddy of mine who is a die-hard Trek fan told me to skip season 1 entirely, which I am totally fine with. But he said he couldn't really pin down where it REALLY started with the Dominion/Founders plot. He said for sure Season 3, but possibly mid-season 2.
Can anyone here help me narrow this down? I know I could just sit and watch the eps in order but I really dislike Sisko as a character (and Avery Brooks as an actor... dude, its not opera. Stop projecting, we have these things called microphones) so I want to get to where the real 'meat' is.
Please help, and thank you!

IMO it was the actors. The writing was pretty good, but they needed a better cast. The whole thing wasn't really worth watching. I'd watch Enterprise instead, it's much better (until they get too serious about linking the episodes, but meh).

I see this complaint thrown around a lot about different Star Trek series, mostly Voyager. I never really understood it because that's been the norm for Star Trek since the beginning. Regardless DS9 is the most polarizing Star Trek series for some reason, and it's definitely different from all the other series. There's rumors that the guy who wrote Babylon 5 originally pitched it as a new Star Trek, but they turned him down then basically stole the idea with DS9. I have no idea how legitimate those rumors are though.indecks wrote: but then they hit the reset button and everyone was safe. Next episode, rinse, repeat.
I like it the best because the show has a real story arc over the whole series, and is much more character driven and political than the other series.
Anyway, I'd watch the first episode (or read a summary), but other than that the first season is pretty much all monster of the week style stuff. I know the JemHadar first appear in the Season 2 finale, I don't recall if anything really important happens otherwise . Stick with it though, the last couple seasons of the show are some of the best scifi tv there is.

I'd consider myself a Trekkie. But similar to you, DS9 is the one series I couldn't really get into as much as the others. I caught it here or there, making a point to catch the Klingon-centric and Mirror Universe episodes in particular. But otherwise I feel kind of blah towards it, like you seem to.

Season one and most of season two is fairly boring for the most part. The pilot episode is the one really worth watching from season one, and season two has a few good ones as well. The second season finale was the one that introduced the Jem'Hadar and things started to slowly improve after that. Season three had a good premiere that introduced the Defiant and season four brought Worf over from TNG, but many of the episodes in both those seasons are skippable for the most part.
Season five was where it really started to pick up though. It had a really neat episode where the DS9 crew travel back in time to the events of a famous TOS episode, and much of the season was spent building up the Dominion War arc that finally got underway in the season finale. The last two seasons are where a lot of excitement in the series is at, along with big space battles and plenty of character-driven drama.
I never liked DS9 that much either since I didn't really watch it as a kid, but I've come to enjoy it now that I've seen a lot of the episodes. I never cared too much for Voyager (although there are some episodes I liked) and I especially could've done without Enterprise, which didn't feel much like a prequel series to me.

Just to throw this out there:
Benicio Del Toro is supposed to be signed on to play as Kahn for the next ST movie. They might as well call the movie Str Trek II: The wrath of kahn.

It was Ricardo Montebon (I know I just mispelled that) playing Khan that was one of the key elements that made that ST movie so dang good. He played an evil villain with a god-complex to a T. I think they should just leave this well enough alone, because I have serious doubt that they are gonna strike lightning twice without Montebon around.Luke wrote:Just to throw this out there:

I barely watched any TV by the time it was on and only caught random episodes every now and then. Apparently it is in the 5th season, but make sure you watch the "Trials and Tribble-ations" episode.

The Star Trek reboot was simply
I find it harder to enjoy older scifi works because much of what's in them is outdated already. Minus the holodeck of course

Re: Star Trek fans please help (trekkies/trekkers peruse within)
Not to derail the thread, but since there's Trekkies here... are all the movies worth watching? I want to go through all of them sometime. Wrath of Kahn I've seen but it's been years and that one always seems to be a fan favorite. Other than that, I was a TNG era fanboy so I saw most of those movies (and I don't remember all of those being that great. The one with the Borg was cool though). I think I did see the movie where the TNG crew and the old crew were both on too, but can't remember it at all.
I liked DS9 back in the day but can't remember much of it at all. I want to say I may have just watched it because it was on before TNG or maybe at the same time, so I'd flip back and forth during commercials.
