meh. The provider who decides to do this will lose a bunch of customers. (You can switch service providers, y'know?)

Look at the bright side: bandwidth caps pretty much kill that digital-only future you guys have been fearing.

there's only one in my area. Time Warner.noiseredux wrote:meh. The provider who decides to do this will lose a bunch of customers. (You can switch service providers, y'know?)
UVerse isn't here yet, another local one (Grandecom) that I liked isn't here, though they said they'd be in this area by now, and there's no effing way I'm going with Suddenlink.

What utopia do you live in where you have a bunch of choices? I have surprisingly few considering I live in the 4th largest city in the US.noiseredux wrote:meh. The provider who decides to do this will lose a bunch of customers. (You can switch service providers, y'know?)

As soon as Charter starts this, they will not be seeing any of my business anymore, and I will be sure to make them well aware of it. I'll go down fighting to ensure that my internet is never throttled, censored, or tampered with in any way. Viva la informática!

Web usage-based billing on its way
At least one major cable operator will institute usage-based billing next year, predicts Craig Moffett, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in New York. He said Cox Communications, Charter Communications or Time Warner Cable may be first to charge Web-access customers for the amount of data they consume, not just transmission speed.
As more video shifts to the Web, the cable operators will inevitably align their pricing models," Moffett said. "With the right usage-based pricing plan, they can embrace the transition instead of resisting it."
I don't like it, but it does make sense. There is only so much bandwidth on an ever growing NetFlix Streaming and User Base. I never stream video other then watching YouTube clips so I should be okay.

The internet is not dead. You pay money to use the internet and someone out there wants to take your money and give you said internet. As long as those two things exist, the internet will exist in a fashion that is reasonably affordable and easily accessed.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

People in many countries have been living with this type of billing for quite a while now. It sucks compared to unlimited, but I think you'll all survive.

Is everyone here too young to remember early dial up rates?
