Sony Picks Up Evil Dead Remake
The long-gestating Evil Dead remake is picking up steam as each week passes, and now it's picked up a distributor. Sony Pictures will distribute the movie in the US (and elsewhere) when it's released -- perhaps as early as Halloween 2012 (although a target date has yet to be announced). As previously reported, Uruguayan director Federico "Fede" Alvarez will helm the remake, which he also co-wrote, with Diablo Cody taking a stab at rewriting his script. Bruce Campbell, star of the original film and its two sequels, will have only a cameo, and original director Sam Raimi will serve as producer.

That's a common misconception, when I first saw it, I thought it was a remake too. From IMDB trivia:Hobie-wan wrote:Remind me why we need a remake of this again we we sort of already have one called Evil Dead 2?
"Often considered to be a remake of The Evil Dead, however this is not accurate. The rights to show scenes from the original could not be obtained to re-cap what happened, so they recreated the beginning to explain how Ash got to the cabin, a headless Linda, etc. "
So technically only the first few minutes are a remake.

ED2 isn't a remake at all. Everyone seems to get confused on that. The first 10 or so minutes of the film are basically "a remake" of the entire film that bring you up to speed if you didn't see the first. But after that, it's the morning AFTER the first film and Ash is still there.Hobie-wan wrote:Remind me why we need a remake of this again we we sort of already have one called Evil Dead 2?
EDIT: Oh, I see someone beat me to explaining that.
ANYWAY, supposedly even though they're calling it a remake, the idea is to make this the real 4th film where new kids go to the same cabin but there's still evil WITHIN THE WOODS. (See what I did there? Referenced the short film that started the whole series.) If that's the case, I'd be pretty ok with it.

I did say 'sort of'. But anyway. If this is going to be a new film, it shouldn't be called a remake. I have my doubts if Sam is only producing and someone else is writing and directing.

I agree. But sequels don't seem to get the green light nowadays, so a lot of sequels and prequels are disguised as remakes. The Thing is a prequel to The Thing (which is a remake) for example. Or like Rob Zombie's Halloween is pretty much a prequel until the last 20 mins or so. Y'know?Hobie-wan wrote:If this is going to be a new film, it shouldn't be called a remake.

I'm open to this actually and I wasn't at first mainly because Bruce Campbell wasn't staring in it and only has a cameo. I don't think it's fair to write it off because of that and Sam Raimi is still involved so it has a chance imo.
Yeah, horror is a funny genre when it comes to sequels. There's only so many you can have before things start to get stale though and starting over seems to be the best option or maybe a prequel? I'm not aiming this statement at the Evil Dead trilogy in particular, just making a general comment on the subject. I'm a HUGE horror fan, in case you couldn't tell
, and I usually keep an open mind w/ sequels, remakes, revamps etc. and make the judgement call after words.

I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!
