The Ultimate PS2 Setup

Hey guys, this my first real post here!

This summer I started a project to create the ultimate setup for my ps2. I’ve already installed Free MC boot on to a memory card in slot two and installed a 200gig internal HD to load games off it from Open PS2 Loader.

I believe the only thing I’m missing now is to get better AV plugs for it (I’m using the default composite cables). I’m using an SDTV that’s cable of using S-video and Component cables. I know Component cables are the best way to go but my Xbox360 is plugged up to the Component ports on the back of my SDTV at all times and I don’t want to be constantly going back there to swap them back and forth. Which makes me lean towards S-video plugs since that port is not in use at the moment.

So this is my dilemma, would Component cables on the ps2 look any better on my SDTV then using S-video? If it does, would it good enough to be worth spending the money on a switch box to use the Component cables?

Remember that not every PS2 game is capable of running in an HD mode.

I would just use Svideo since the PS2 is not exactly a graphic powerhouse. Also another thing to consider is that a cheap component switch box will tend to be just that, cheap. I tried buying a $20 one once and the picture that came out of it was absolutely terrible. You might have to spend a little more coin to get a decent switcher, and then have to decide if it was really worth it.

I just use the 3-in-1 component cables, and switch which system they are plugged in to.

If you want to avoid that, S-vid should be fine.

Your title is misleading I thought this would be a developer White PSX or something. Are you are using a Fat internal drive or Slim USB setup?

Get a Component Cable
The 480p capability is worth it, even if not every game utilizes it.

There are ways to get DVD-9 gold discs installed and even games that are posted as non installable. You can also install Import games, and I recommend you get a Flip Top.

Yes, component is noticably better, especially in really colorful games. None of the games I play support HD, but its still noticable.

Yes I know, but is it just as noticeable if your using an SDTV?

I have no need for a flip top since Open PS2 Loader has a built in HDL server, so I can just dump all my games on my PC and then transfer them over LAN (this includes imports). This way I can also avoid waring out my PS2's laser.

I already said I installed an internal HD, so it's a fat PS2.

Yes, I play my PS2 with component cables on a SD TV and it makes a noticable difference over s-video. Your best option is to buy a component switch.

As far as I can tell, the only bad reviews it got was using it with HD signals, which shouldn't be a problem for you since you have an SDTV. I use it on my HDTV for my DVD player, Wii, PS2 and PSP. The main reason I got it, actually, is for the PSP. The front component ports are VERY convenient for hooking the PSP up (it's like hooking a controller up to a console!). It also has auto switching, which is a nice feature to have. I haven't had any problems with it, I've been very happy with it.

It will be better in any set up as far as I know.

Alright, I guess I'm going with component. I'm assuming I should go with the official Sony cables or is there a cheaper alternative that just as good?
