Need help connecting my PC to my stereo

Post by dudex77 »

So I've had my PC connected to my stereo via what seems like a headphone jack to rca cable. One end can plug into a regular headphone jack and at the other end is a male and female so one goes straight into the AUX input and the other one has another RCA cable between the other AUX input plug. Anyway the sound has always been mono for some reason which sucks so I need to know what I need to get so I can get stereo.

look at the end of the "headphones" jack. if there is only one ring around the metal part, its a mono jack.

if it's got two rings, its a stereo jack, and you need to check your settings in control panel.

Also, If the headphone style 3.5mm connector is only inserted halfway, it can cause a mono effect, so check that. Check all your software side volume controls. Check your stereo for any kind of mono button, as one of mine used to have one and sometimes it got accidentally pressed. If all else fails, install a cheap sound card, disable your onboard sound from BIOS, and see if you still have mono on the new card.

You want the jack to look like this:

Yes it's a rather large image...

Also try plugging in a pair of headphones and see if you get stereo sound. If you only have mono it's probably a sound card or settings issue, but it could also mean your pc's input jack has a bent connector.

Ok so it's not the pc that's the problem and the plug has two rings around it so I'll just assume the cord is fucked for whatever reason. So right now I'm trying to make my own sort of thing by getting earbud headphones cutting off the buds and connecting the wires to rca cables. So far I got the left speaker working perfectly but for some reason when I do the same thing with the right earbud it's not giving me any sound in the right speaker :?
Edit: Ok now I got the right speaker working but it's still giving me mono! What the hell? it's going from two separate ear buds! Before I got combined stereo or whatever so I heard everything but now it's just the left speaker stuff

That means your computer is putting out mono audio. it will still be heard in two speakers, but is just the mono sound doubled.

Did you check the sound settings?

Also check the master volume control panel in the sound settings.
You may not have needed to ruin your cables, and almost everywhere sells a 3.5mm to rca cable these days.

try a different input on the amp, maybe your rca connector amp side has a bad connection
