Should I Buy a PSP?

Thanks all of these responses are really helpful! I think I'll make my purchase over the next week. Any other game recommendations are welcome.

With that said I am looking for a PSP. I'll check the buy/sell forum.

I will try to make some recommendations:

First Person Shooter:not many came out on the system, let alone good ones. Only ones I can think of are the Coded Arms games.
Adventure: Daxter would be good and cheap. God of War games, Medievil, and Secret Agent Clank too.
Side Scroller: Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles, Metal Slug Collection
Puzzle: Lumines 1&2, Puzzle Quest
Racing: Wipeout, Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo
Sports: The Tony Hawk Project 8 or Underground Remix 2

Also there are many good compilations out there too. Capcom Classics 1&2, Neo Geo Collection Vol 1, Samurai Shodown Collection, Metal Slug Collection, Taito Memories, Namco Museum, Sega Genesis Collection, ect.

btw, if you buy any Minis, PSOne Classics, or TG16 games off of PSN you can share them on your PS3 and PSP.

Don't overlook games on PSN or PSone Classics. I've explored the PS1 library so much more since I've gotten a PSP since it's very convenient with the portability and sleep mode. I've even sold some of my physical PS1 games and replaced them with downloads since I prefer to play them on the PSP.

Just to build on a few of these:

For FPS games, there wasn't many but there were some great ones, be sure to check out Medal of Honor Heroes and Heroes 2. It's not a puzzle game but Beats is a good rhythm game that takes any standard MP3s on your system. There's no shortage of racing games on the system, those mentioned in the quoted post are amazing but I'd also like to add Outrun 2006. It's great.

I'd like to speak up for the much-maligned PSP Go, if I may As someone who has no ethical problem with running backups of games I actually own, the PSP Go is awesome. Though it hasn't always been the case, as of about a year ago it's become super-easy to install custom firmware on a Go, meaning you can easily play backups of those all cheap UMDs you'll find. It's also a snap to rip your old PSX discs and run most of them near-flawlessly. Emulators for 16-bit systems and older are pretty much perfect, and most of my GBA library runs flawlessly, too!

I really like the form factor of the Go: the buttons-below-the-screen setup reminds me of playing a GBA SP, and in a pocket, it's a bit more slender than a DS Lite. The built-in 16 gigs of memory means I have yet to purchase an overpriced Memory Stick. Having Skype access built-in isn't a feature I use often, but as someone who doesn't own a smartphone, it's nice to know it's there.

But the best feature for me, and the reason I sought out a Go, is that you can pair it with a PS3 controller. This, plus a video-out docking station (Go accessories are stupid cheap, due to the system's commercial failure), makes the PSP Go an incredible home-and-portable retro gaming machine. I can sit on my couch and play Vagrant Story on my TV when I'm at home, and if I want to keep playing when I leave, I just make a savestate (a system-level feature for all games), or just slide the screen down to put it to sleep, pop it in my pocket, and pick up right where I left off later!

Hey, don't get me wrong: like most people, I thought the PSP Go was a terrible value proposition when it was first released, as it was overpriced and under-featured. But time and obsolescence have rendered most of the system's deficiencies moot, and I really think it deserves serious consideration from any first-time PSP buyer.

I'm also a big fan of PS1 on PSP. As a collector, I love the fact that I can easily rip games that I own physical copies of and play them on PSP.

I've actually thought of getting a Go just for the "console setup" you describe. Hell then I could actually rip UMD's that I own on my Slim and transfer them to the Go. Hmm....

you don't need a second PSP as much as you need a PS3.
