it is dizzying how quickly 25 years as a Penn State football fan and 15 years as a Syracuse basketball fan can start to feel like an empty and tainted experience.

It is. SU is my alma mater and I'm a big hoops fan (I go to at least one game a year and watch almost all of them on TV). I've been a Penn State fan since I can remember knowing what football was, since they were/are my home state's team and had an excellent coach and tradition. I attended what turned out to be Paterno's last game last month.

Everything alleged at both places would be horrible for the victims obviously, but the scandals are also painful for those of us who've poured part of our soul into these institutions and think of our fandom/attachment to these programs as part of our identity. For you non-sports fans, imagine if Miyamoto had been molesting kids at Ninteno headquarters since the early 80s to try and understand how soul crushing this is...

Given that it seems to be that these scandals are isolated to teams I care about, I fully expect ESPN to release stories this week that Jerry Jones impregnated a 15 year old and that the Philly fanatic exposed himself to kindergardeners.

^That was only a joke. I didn't go to a single football game this year...but then again it was because I didn't really care. I went to a few B-Ball games, only because the tickets were free. And although I'm a huge Blackhawks fan, I've only been to a few games, which is like attending .05% of the games.


The Penn and SU stuff is stomach turning. I'm glad that what happened is being brought to light, but it is just so sad. What is worse is that we're not working on a solution. How DO we keep pedophiles out of schools, Universities, and in general? At what point do the ends justify the means? Do we polygraph every single employee in every state (we drug test everyone)? Do we target specific sectors?

I have no answers. All I know is that the molestation of kids isn't a fad but a disease that seems to be covered up, and exploited more than the issue of trying to prevent it. Plus, it is very hard to implement a "no touch" rule on a contact sport, especially on one where a spank means "good job".

Important note: A pedophile is not a a children abuser in the same way that having rape fantasies doesn't make you a rapist or how dreaming about murdering people doesn't make you a murdered until you actually do it.

The only solution is to provide pedophiles help and relief to their impulses.

Hmm, finding a boy or girl that looks much younger than they are might be one way. A lot of asian girls for instance look way younger than they are. At least to caucasian standards. So that might be a way. Unless you're into really young children. Then I don't see a lot of options really...

It must be hard for someone to one day wake up and realise they are attracted to children. I feel sorry for people that have to go through this. It doesn't make them bad people. They just have a huge problem and a burden they will have to carry for the rest of their life. Only acting upon those urges would make them bad people.
