Silly question but can anyone think of a game where

Post by kebark »

You're in a 2D platform world with added RPG elements which effect the route through the game. For example you need to improve your jump to get on to a ledge to go through the game on one route, or you need to improve your strength to remove a boulder to go through a cave on a different route?

I guess their must be a game like it out there somewhere =/

Are you trying to think of a game you played or asking for recommendations? I can't tell...

There's lots of games with elements like this: Zelda II, Metroid, Zeliard, Legacy of the Wizard, Faxanadu, Rygar...

Any other details?

Sorry I just wanted some to try :-)
They all have multiple routes and things?

If so thank you, I've spent all evening racking my brains so thanks :)

I think you just described Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.....

and then that means any CV game for GBA that is in the same vein, as well as Metroids as already mentioned (Super Metroid is great as well as the GBA Metroids).

LOL seems that way, I was more thinking of something that had features of Sonic and Knuckles (the way Knuckles can bash his way through the obstacles whilst Sonic can jump to different places) but with the players deciding the way they wanted the character. Sounds like Metroidvanias are about as accurate a term as any.

Whelp, there's a lot of breakable secret walls and stuff in the CV's, heh. But I see what you're saying about Sonic and Knuckles kind of having their own abilities to get through stages. You can eventually play through some of the CV's as a different character and they play differently, but yeah.

Well the Metroidvania's could be something to look into for sure, and people can't forget Blaster Master. Gotta fight the boss of world 1 to upgrade your tanks gun so you can blow up some blocks to get to stage 2, you eventually get a hovering ability and there's backtracking to get to other area's throughout the game. I love Metroid to death, but I think if we're talking NES only, Blaster Master really beats Metroid to its own game if you ask me and is a lot more dynamic with the tank, level design/graphics, and the overhead interior stages. Only problem is the game has no saves/passwords and is brutal as hell.

That reminds me, I have a memory card somewhere with a saved game with Richter on the 2nd castle. Never could beat the 2nd castle with him. Anyone else find that task TOO challenging?

Aliens: Infestation on the DS is one of the more recent examples I can think of (the game also got good reviews, IIRC)
