Mac shmups?

Post by dsheinem »

So I can obviously get MAME and various console emulators up and running in OSX if I am so inclined, but I was curious if anyone knows of shmups that were designed for or ported to a Mac OS. There's obviously a ton of doujin shmups for the PC, but as far as I can tell those don't have Mac ports (and thus require DOSbox or some such).

So, are there shmups designed for (or officially ported to) Mac? And are they any good?

Ah the mac shmup, the elusive beast.

There's at least one on the app store, called Irukandji, that has a pretty cool visual style, and is pretty fun to play through, though it's a bit short.

There's another one that I found a while back, that I can't recall the name of, where you're an atom or something, and the game is on an atomic scale, it's pretty cool.

Now where it gets interesting are unofficial ports. Most of these are cider wrappers and whatnot, and are a bit hit or miss. There's a cider port of Raiden III for instance, which runs quite well actually, though it works your computer pretty hard for an older game, due to the cider wrapper.

There's also a guy who's ported over most of the Touhou games, and those work pretty well, I'm not sure if I should be linking to these, or the Raiden III one either, as technically I think they'd fall under pirated goods. You can get the cider wrapper and do it yourself though, if you have an official copy of the game. It's a bit of a beast to do though, so bear that in mind.

Basically, your best bet is going to be MAME for shmups, there just don't seem to be a lot on the mac, as there isn't a big doujin scene, though damn I wish there was!
