i don't know if you remember when he first came out but he was supposed to be THE rapper of my generation according to all the rap mags, BET ect. to me he underacheived, but then again i don't care for alot of east coast shit.

It just seems weird to say he underachieved.

The closest he was 'commercially' was with It Was Written and that with my personal opinion is better than Illmatic. But I think this type of conversation is just you got your opinion and I got mine and we just leave it like that.

i believe source magazine touted him as the next tupac at that time. that was way before his death and tupac had just blown up. now obviously nas isn't on that level as far as mainstream goes. btw you have posted a few indie rappers i want to check out i would have never heard of otherwise.

Tupac had hits and that whole rivalry of coasts and The Source awards incident to sell records so it was pretty obvious everything in between Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. was going to be in the shadows in the mainstreams eye. Dope that your checking out the artists that get posted in here. What artists do you listen to in the genre?

I certainly remember when Nas first came out. And Illmatic did deliver. Had he never made another album, he'd be even more revered. Honestly, Illmatic was a bit of a curse for him. I've never read a review of one of his albums that didn't basically say "it's not Illmatic." With that in mind, I don't think he's over-hyped at all. If anything, I think he's often unfairly dismissed because it seems impossible to make lightning strike twice.

now that i'm in my mid 30's i honestly an not into the genre as much as i was when the whole gangsta rap thing exploded. mostly stick to memphis/atlanta style. triple 6 mafia, project pat, lord infamous, evil pimp, t.i., gucci mane, slaine. i really like horrorcore/rapcore the most but struggle to find much quality or nonjuggalo.lol

and i'm sorry, but i enjoy lil wayne also. the dude gets hated on but he makes music people obviously want to hear. his beats are phat and i like his flow.

I love Southern hip hop in general. It's honestly what I listen to most I think. And whatever. Hater's gon' hate -- I've been a huge Lil Wayne fan since 2007. I like what I like.
