Bootays list is pretty awesome.

If you like the 16-bit aspect of Axelay and want to try some other good horizontal shumps I'd recomend.

Genesis:
Thunder Force 3
Lightening Force
Steel Empire

Sega CD:
Android Assault

Super NES:
Super R-Type
R-Type 3

NeoGeo:
Blazing Star
Pulstar

and some others horizontals..

Ps1:
R-type Delta
G Darius
Einhander

Ps2:
Gradius V
R-Type Final

There are alot of great vertical shmups too, but alot of those were mentioned.
I'd especailly recomend these:

Genesis:
MUSHA

Sega Cd:
Robo Aleste

Saturn:
DoDonpachi
Soukyugurentai

Dreamcast:
Trigger Heart Exelica
Giga Wing 1 and 2

Arcade:
Guwange

Definately do a you tube seach and check out the videos and see what looks like your kind of game.

Second, I may have ruined my shmup experience by starting with Ikaruga. I've tried Galactic Attack, Darius Gaiden, and Axelay. Of those Axelay is the only one I liked (maybe b/c it has vertical levels, can't quite put my finger on it). So what are some games that are similar or as good as Ikaruga?
Thanks excellent. But keep in mind, most shumps originate from Arcades in which Coins are needed to countinue. The format is usually kept for console versions.

Similar to Ikaruga? Graphically many, technically few. I would recommend:

Enherizer - PS
G-Darus - PS
Einhander - PS
Radiant Silvergun - SAT
Soukyugurentai - SAT

Maybe he meant Einhander?

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

That's why I asked. Unless he was referring to a romanized version of the Japanese name, but as far as I know, it's still called Einhander in Japan.

Aero Blasters (Turbo Grafx) and Air Buster (Genesis) are both fun games. They are the same game, but each port is a little different. I prefer the Turbo version but both are quite nice.
