Tribes: Ascend

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

So, after watching several videos and painfully waiting to get into the Beta, I decided to just buy the VIP pre-order. I wont be able to actually play it effectively (my netbook just can't handle it) until Friday when I'll have a more capable PC but I'm taking a gamble and betting on this game. From all the gameplay footage it looks like it will satisfy that Doom/Quake itch that hasn't been scratched by many new games in the last 5 years. Almost nobody plays UT3 and about the closest feel I get is with the scout in TF2.

Although it will be F2P, the VIP package gets you into official servers and gives you some extra XP/Tribes Points to start off with. I was a bit skeptical about the model, which is almost pay to win but not quite. I guess we'll see how it goes. I'm hoping that they release dedicated server tools where people can just have everything unlocked.

So anybody else participating in the beta?

For those of you wonder what exactly Tribes: Ascend is, I'll send you over to the WTF is... video by TotalBiscuit:

I'd love to try the beta, Tribes is the shit, but unfortunately my PC is quite outdated these days.

Yeah, it wont run well on anything less than a GeForce 8600. Even with an FPS config the Intel 4500HD struggles to keep even 20fps.

I have an 8600 GTS, so perhaps I can run it... I'll have to look up the system requirements.

There are no official system requirements but the min. recommended is an 8800. Partially because they haven't actually implemented low settings yet. It nearly runs playable on this netbook with a few tweaks.

I remember playing Global Agenda (Hi-Rez's previous game) at Quake Con and thinking: "Hey, this kinda reminds me of Tribes." Imagine how blown my mind was when I learned they were developing the next Tribes game!

The beta key is taken, however, I may get another key (they dish them out randomly every once in a while) to give out.

So, weapon balance is majorly off right now, but, the game is a lot of fun. It feels a bit like Quake and a bit like Halo. The weapons sans a few are all projectile weapons thus require you to aim ahead and adjust aim for distance and drop. I'm falling in love with the pacing, I just hope they can balance it out.
