Is Rockman X3 playable for a guy who can't read Japanese?

Post by BoringSupreez »

I'd like to get Rockman X3 for Saturn, since it's better than the SNES version of Mega Man X3 and about the same price, but I don't know if reading is necessary for the game. Anyone here played that version?

BTW, I already know about the Mega Man X Collection for PS2/GCN. I don't want it, for various reasons.

Mega Man X3 has a highly cerebral plot; if you can't read Japanese you won't pick up on all the nuances.

It's a standard Megaman game, not an RPG or anything. It could be in Swahili and anyone could still finish it.....

Keep in mind you can just get the Super Famicom version if you have a SNES for cheaper than both the Saturn and SNES versions.

Better than the SNES version? Who told you that?

Yep, I cannot concur with that one at all. SNES version is way better in my book, the music is pretty awful in the CD versions.

They added in some cool animated cutscenes, but that's about it.

I'm pretty sure X3 came out for the Saturn in Europe in English. That might be an option for you.

The main problem with the Saturn version is that the screen is condensed with bars on the sides. The resolution of the Saturn is higher than the SNES, but X3 used the SNES resolution and therefore does not display at full-screen.

The SNES also has sprite based cut-scenes instead of anime ones.

Because of the reduced play area on the screen, I do prefer the SNES version. However, the Saturn version is a lot cheaper.

Yeah, X3 must have had a lower print run or was released near the end of the SNES's lifespan in the US at least? It's definitely pretty hard to track down. Shelled out $50 for it a few years ago when I finally found and could afford a copy at Vintage Stock.

I thought the CD versions were supposed to be better for their superior soundtracks. If that's a bunch of nonsense, I'll just get the SFC version like brunoafh said. Is there anything major I have to do to get my plain vanilla NTSC SNES to play SFC games?

I would have preferred that, but currently there are only Japanese copies on Ebay.

Nah, just pluck the tabs out with wire cutters or something, they're located on the backside of the cart input area. Open the dust flaps and you'll see them. You can just google it if you have trouble and you'll get simple instructions.
