Top 11 survival horror games

Post by Gamerforlife »

I like this list because it has some games I had never heard of. Plus, I really love the two games at the top off the list no matter what anyone says

I'll have to play Michigan or Illbleed for that matter. I still think RE4 is vastly overrated and that the series had hit its highest point with RE2 a decade ago, so is Siren (perhaps the PS3 remake will fix the problems plaguing the original). Eternal Darkness? Will probably never play it.. And I must say Fatal Frame is the scariest supernatural game ever!

Eh, the games I found scary & enjoyable are at the other end of the list (Clock Tower, Fatal Frame/Project Zero, Silent Hill) RE4 was great, but more of an action game - there were very few true OMGWTF!?!?!? moments and I personally found REmake, RE2 and RE0 more fitting of the survival horror mantle than RE4 ever was. Condemned 2 has nothing on the original - where Criminal Origins was like a slow decent into madness and terror with some brilliantly timed set pieces, Condemned 2 was all flash and no substance; WTF!?!?! moments mean very little if theres one every ten seconds and the impact of coming face to face with some fucked up monster is lessened when you're fighting black tar monsters right from the get go.

You're missing out if you haven't played Eternal Darkness.

I've actually heard of all of these, and played most of them. I was surprised about the Silent Hill choice, actually. Most people feel Silent Hill 2 was the best of the series, and though 3 had its moments, I didn't find it all that scary. The Fatal Frame choice was good, of course, as was putting Siren on the list. I agree with Pulsar and Bootaaay about Resident Evil 4. The pinnacle for me was Resident Evil 2, though the remake of 1 was excellent. Also Eternal Darkness is very good.

I did see some pretty odd choices...Michigan, Hellknight, Illbleed, and Sweet Home don't typically appear on these lists. Sweet Home is a great game, and it's also damn hard. Don't grind enough, the monsters rape you. Grind too much and you run out of healing items. Illbleed is supposedly pretty competent, though little known. Hellknight I don't see very often, and I know very little about the game. What I do know is that it's apparently very good and under appreciated. I'm gonna have to look this one up. And then there's Michigan. Again, I've never played it, but I hear the point of the game is to look and that's about it. There's only three commands you can do anyway, so not much to it. Also, the quirkiness apparently hurts the game pretty bad.

I haven't played Condemned 2, but the first was incredible. If the sequel is only half as good, that's still better than a lot of other games I've played.

Personally, if going by the same rules, I'd have to make a list like this:

10. Eternal Darkness
9. Siren
8. Dino Crisis
7. Echo Night: Beyond
6. Parasite Eve
5. Clocktower 3
4. Condemned
3. Fatal Frame
2. Resident Evil 2
1. Silent Hill 2

But pardon that list, as some of these games are heavily tinged in nostalgia.

Illbleed

Illbleed's one of my favorite games of all-time. I have a ton of videos for it on YouTube (under the name kubevubin), so just check them out by clicking on the link in my signature. Also, I wrote a rather long review for the game in another topic a long time ago.

Play clocktower for the snes. It may sound a little weird, but it beats the pants off of any other game in series.
Don't that just look oh so tasty?

To be honest I think you should take this article with a pinch of salt due to this corker
