My best friend recently bought me a Japanese Cowboy Bebop the video game for PS1. Seriously, this guy's awesome, and he did it for no reason at all and just gave it to me cause he knew I'd like it.
Unfortunately my PS2 which I play PS1 & 2 games off of doesn't support it. I pop it in the tray and I just get a red screen.
My question is two-fold (and I apologize if this is a frequently asked/no brainer question):
1. I've been considering buying a 60gig PS3 to be able to play both PS1/2/3 games all on one system. Would I be able to play this Japanese game on an American PS3?
2. If not, would I then need to buy a Japanese PSX to play this game on? If so, can I find them on the cheap?
The other option I suppose would be if it were possible to mod my PS2 or PS3 in some way to read the Japanese disc....
thanks for the input ahead of time guys!

Re: Playing Japanese PS1 games
PS1's are common enough that you can find them at fleamarkets. Look through the stacks and see if there are JP PS1's mixed in them. I got one like this two years ago.
Even if they dont work, the same parts work from a US PS1.
That or mod a system. Dont know if you can still find PS1 mod chips or just mod the PS2. I got lucky some time ago and got a modded PS1 real cheap.
maybe if your lucky you can find a modded ps like I did.
One more thing, you can use the same controllers and memory cards on a JP playstation too.

Re: Playing Japanese PS1 games
You can find a modded PS1 for $20-30 these days. That's probably gonna be your best (and cheapest) bet.
Your other two options are to mod your PS2, or get swap magic for your PS2. You won't be able to play NTSC-J PS1 games on your NTSC-U PS3.

I know SnowKitty on these boards does PS1 and PS2 mods and also sells pre-modded systems.

I used Swap Magic on my PS2 personally. You can buy it from eStarland for $25 or $30.

1. The PS3 Fat is reputated to YLOD more often then the PS3 Slim.Sideroller wrote:My question is two-fold (and I apologize if this is a frequently asked/no brainer question):

2. A lucky chance find at the Swap meet.
The PS1 and PS2 can be used going with a boot disc or Mod chip. The PS2 sometimes has problems reading CDs once it has a lot of mileage, best to save it for PS2 games. The most convenient method is a mod chip in a PS1, the grey PSX models are easiest to solder due to a larger PCB. I would get the 7000 grey mode, it has both the Soundscope Music Player and the must have Parallel Port for utility carts. PM Snowkitty if you want to buy one.
