Adventure Time is getting a comic series! Normally, a cartoon getting a comic book is lame, but it's written by the author of Dinosaur Comics, which is awesome. I will definitely have to buy it when it comes out.

Started reading the Goon. I think this is a series I could really get into...
I'm noticing I favor Dark Horse/Image/Not Big 2 comics. I'm not sure why, I guess I'm getting kinda hipster.
Of course, these comics can also get away with stuff that the Big 2 can't.
I also kinda want to get into Deadpool. It looks pretty funny, but I'm not completely sure where to start....

Dark Horse handles all of my Joss Whedon needs, so I appreciate them for that. Their Angel & Faith series is high on my list of faves right nowThe Last Horseman wrote:Started reading the Goon. I think this is a series I could really get into...

I started reading Deadpool back when Joe Kelly was writing and it was awesome. I posted a panel in this thread with the classic Dragon Punch/Kitty Pryde moment

Re: The Comic Book Thread
So here we are, at the end of 2011. We still have December to get through, but odds are there isn't anything too big gonna happen that isn't already happening as I type this. So it seems like a perfect time to reminisce about the best 2011 had to offer us in the world of comics.
What do you think was some of the best comic stuff the year had to offer us?
-DC Comics: The New 52 is interesting so far. Despite loving the old DC Universe and not liking it being ripped away from me (I know what my dad is talking about now when he says The Crisis on Infinite Earths is both one of his favorite and most hated comics at the same time), I'm still reading the New 52 issues which are for the most part keeping me entertained. Hopefully things will stay that way, but we are only 3 issues, after all.
-DC Comics: Flashpoint - The immediate precursor to The New 52. This is the story that caused New 52 to happen. A great alternate reality tale that pulls a comic book & sci-fi fan like myself right in. I just wished it was longer. The story could have been so much better if fleshed out more, ala Crisis on Infinite Earths.
-Uncanny X-Force: The Dark Angel Saga - The surprise hit of the year, for me. I bought the issues initially just because I had heard the team was visiting the Age of Apocalypse reality, then got hooked on the epic story and dark, dramatic-looking artwork.
-Venom - Okay, it's not a secret I'm a huge Venom fan, so many of you aren't probably surprised by this pick, but I am. I HATED that Venom wasn't Eddie Brock, yet again. I didn't like the military set-up of the series when I saw it, either. But I picked up some issues anyways, and was pleasantly surprised. Well written, and Flash turns out to be a GREAT character to pit-against the Venom symbiote.
-Captain America: The First Avenger - Best comic book movie of the year, hands-down. I loved the retro-style of the whole film and how it took place during the 1940s. Great acting, great story, great look, and a lot of action.
-X-Men: First Class - A very enjoyable X-Men movie, and much better than the last 2 films, IMO. I know how many X-Fans feel about it. And they have legitimate complaints about it being completely non-canon. But I still thought it was entertaining as hell and personally didn't care that it wasn't cannon. Plus Magneto is a complete bad-ass in this one.

Manga
Anyone read anythign by Asano Inio? I really like his stuff. Solanin, Nijigahara Hlograph, What a Wonderful Life, Oyasumi Punpun. I love his stuff. They're comics about like everyday life pretty much...except more depressing....well not all of them.
Anyone have any manga suggestions? I'm not looking for anything like most animes or anything. I like story...so...yeh.
Besides Oyasumi Punpun, I'm also reading Berserk, and Lone Wolf and Cub.

Re: The Comic Book Thread
Well seems PunisherMax is going to be part of the recent culling Marvel is up to.
Though im more than happy to see all of the Wolverine books end except the normal one, I have mixed feelings on this Punisher book.
I really don't like the angle that was taken that Frank stopped loving his family after vietnam. It just never felt right and didnt mesh with Valley Forge Valley Forge. Frank's feelings for O'Brien and their child just don't work if Frank stopped loving his family and wanted to leave them.
Has anyone read the latest Punisher book set in the main marvel universe? I wonder if might be worth a look since ill have a spot open in my pull list.

Re: The Comic Book Thread
I'm not as hardcore a comic fan as BurningDoom so I haven't read much this year. I've been an on again, off again comic book fan all my life. I guess you could call me a casual fan. I really haven't read anything by Marvel in quite some time, but I am digging the New 52. Kudos to DC as I'm living proof of what they tried to accomplish with the New 52. I'm buying DC comic books and I'm buying a lot of them. Truthfully, I never really bought many DC books before in my life despite being a huge Batman fan. All the Batman stuff I read was in trade or graphic novel form. I have a ton of Marvel books from my high school and college years though. Right now though, DC is sucking up all my money with lots of New 52 books and the money they were already getting from me for their Vertigo book Fables. I'll just post some more thoughts on the New 52 in addition to whatever I've already said about it in previous posts as I've read a few more issuesBurningDoom wrote:So here we are, at the end of 2011. Animal Man # 1 - I just read a first print copy of this, which cost me a little more than I'd like to pay for a comic. This seems like a hot commodity on ebay for some reason, but I enjoyed it. I like the art style, it seems different from other stuff I've read. I also found myself really liking the Animal Man character even though I'm really unfamiliar with any of his previous stories. The book seems to have a tie to the current Swamp Thing book, which is cool too
Batgirl # 3 - Still my favorite New 52 book, and I love the stuff between Batgirl and Nightwing in this issue. I'm officially a Gail Simone fan and may have to check out her previous works, especially Birds of Prey.
Justice League # 3 - After a lukewarm first issue, I think this book has gotten better and better. This issue had a GREAT cover and all of the Wonder Woman stuff in this issue was a lot of fun. She's the star of this issue. It's funny seeing how everyone is looking at Batman as the odd man out in this team, but I hope the next couple issues will have him proving to them why he's just as good a super hero as they are even without super powers
Nightwing # 3 - Another book that's getting better with each issue, there's an interesting story being told here that looks like it's really going to have a big impact on the Nightwing mythology. I can't wait to see Batgirl in issue # 4 and I wonder if it's going to be what happened in Batgirl # 3, but from Dick's perspective
Demon Knights # 3 - This one's starting to bore me just a bit. Three issues and we're still on the same, damn battle. Really? Can we move the story forward already?
Wonder Woman # 3 - A pretty cool issue that seems to change Wonder Woman's origins. I like Cliff Chiang's way of portraying a scene through multiple, small panels on one page. I used to be a huge Greek mythology fan in high school and I like strong, female characters so I'm sticking with this one. It's nice to have a Greek mythology story without a dickhead main character(cough cough Kratos cough cough)
Green Lantern Corps # 3 - I'm not a big Green Lantern fan, but I'm loving this book for some reason. I think I like the team aspect of it, seeing so many Lanterns in one book and seeing them work together and make sacrifices for eachother. The corps feels like a true brotherhood of guys who would do anything for each other. I feel like if there's one superhero team I'd want to be on, it would be the Green Lantern Corps
Batman and Robin # 3 - Still don't like Damien, but this issue and the last one have me really digging Alfred. This book reminds me of how cool he is
Detective Comics # 3 - I'm not sure how I feel about this series. I'm curious about where the story is going and what the Dollmaker's true intentions are, but I'm not totally loving the book for some reason. I think Snyder's Batman is just making the other Batman books pale in comparison, speaking of which...
Batman # 3 - Awesome! Great new villain and I love how this book and All Star Western are fleshing out Gotham's history and making it seem like it's always been a cursed city, with secrets that even the World's Greatest Detective has missed. I like a good conspiracy, secret society story and it's a fitting enemy for Batman. It's hard for one single person to truly challenge The Batman, but a powerful, centuries old society that's older than he is, they can do it
Aside from DC books, I picked up
Buffy the Vampire Slayer # 3 - Best issue thus far, with a nice twist at the end and a clue about how different this new world Buffy has created truly is now with a new type of vampire for her to deal with. Still, this book has nothing on Angel and Faith
That's my favorite comic book series I've read this year, Angel and Faith
Speaking of significant comic book news this year....
Batman Arkham City - The best Batman game ever. Nuff said
I really want to see that Captain America movie since BurningDoom and everybody seem to love it. I have a copy of X-Men First Class I want to watch too, if I can ever manage to get Batman Arkham City out of my PS 3
Lastly, I have to mention the new tv show Once Upon a Time. It's really good and already has a full 22 episode order and decent ratings. It's not a Fables ripoff, but has a similar concept. Fables fans like myself might want to check it out, or even fans of old Disney movies. It has a bit of a Disney vibe to it
