I have already beat SF1 & 2 and right now I am still in a SF mode, but don't want to play SFCD or SF3 since they are in my basement. I have a copy of FFT and am debating on playing it on my PS3. So... how similar is it and would I enjoy FFT?
Basically what others said, you'll probably like it. It's definitely a lot more advanced compared to this, like the things others mentioned, and in these games and the Tactics Ogre series, you also have to focus on where your characters are standing/facing at the end of their move. Basically if you attack, or get attacked in the front there's a chance of blocking/countering, if you attack on the side you have a higher chance of hitting someone or being hit, and attacking characters in the back usually dishes out a lot. The maps are much more limited in character usage too, so don't expect to be able to control 12 people on the battlefield. So you have to think a little more about who you want to use, whereas with SF1 here it feels like you don't have to worry so much about the mix.

I'm not big on the job system though. But yeah, most people love FFT so definitely give it a shot. From there, I'd say if you enjoy it you're in for a treat with the Tactics Ogre games, because they're even way better in my book.

I also highly recommend Arc the Lad 1-2 if you haven't played those.
Ya, I agree here. Though TO you get 10 guys...

I loooove TO haha

It's funny I never thought about that, but you're totally right... 10 for TO, haha. I always like when these games have higher limits for your unit selection in battles, it just feels awesome controlling a lot of units.

FFT felt really limited throughout most of the whole thing, like ~6 was a lot in some battles, I remember 5 being the limit in a lot, etc. Maybe that's another reason I don't love it as much as others, lol.

I agree completely. In TO on PSP I believe the limit is 12

On FFT / Tactics Ogre: I think anyone that enjoys Shining Force is very likely to enjoy them. But Fire Emblem is much closer to Shining Force as it is "flat" terrain, no "jobs" structure etc. I think I personally prefer Tactics Ogre, but the Fire Emblem I played was also extremely memorable. Shining Force is good but for me those were better.

On Domingo: he gets extremely high HP, Defence and Magic Resistance (you have to level him up from 1 though), he half-flies (other fliers I had could go across some obstacles that Domingo couldn't clear) and he has good spells. He draws attention to him so he is good at tanking like Max.
He gets also a healthy chunk of MP so not only can he cast Freeze, but he also got Desoul (never used it but I think it is a good spell) and Attack. Attack is extremely useful to boost specific allies that you may want to level up or that are among a select few that can withstand hits from a given boss (one of which is usually Domingo). In the remake I had Narsha which also casts Attack but in the Genesis version it may be only Domingo doing that.

Chapter 3 is in the books. The Laser Eye was quite the contraption, but luckily it only took out a few party members. So far the game is relatively easy, but fun nonetheless - I did egress for the first time after crossing the bridge for the last fight of Ch. 3.

Also, I think I have hit my limit for listening to the game's repetitive music...I will have to start listening to something else while I play

starting chapter 5. here lately my character has been get double wacked or critical hit wiping me out on first encounters. makes me just want to keep him in the rear. mae has become a tank though.

also since this is the first srpg i've played and some are asking about other series in comparision, what about dragon force? i played a burned copy for about an hour and was like wtf. didn't know what was going on or understand what to do. i'd probably buy the game if it was enjoyable as this one.

Dragon Force is quite different.

still on the battle after the big robot fight. I got lucky enough on that last one so that Zylo got a critial hit against the boss. Took out 70-something of his 99 HP in one hit. Yeah!

the next battle is the one where there's tons of flying stuff to attack you from all sides. It's tough, but I know I'll manage. I had to Egress out twice now though. And it's a long battle. But I did finally just promote Tao at LVL 20, so now I think my whole party is promoted except for 2 more Mages that I just need a couple more levels to promote.

I have lost twice in the battle at the start of Chapter 4 (a long battle across a big open field).

Should I promote people first? What's the pros/cons of doing so?

don't promote magic people until level 20.
don't promote fighting people until level 10.

when you promote them effects how much they will gain with each level including which spells they will learn in the case of mages.
