Believe it or not, I have never really gotten into RPG's. I played Final Fantasy 1 via Final Fantasy Origins on the PS1 for a bit, but other than that, I never really got into them. What RPG should I go for?
I don't have anything against JRPG's, and I'd prefer to play on an older system, such as the Sega Genesis/Saturn, the Super Famicom, and the PS1. But I don't wanna go all the way back to the Famicom or other consoles from that era. I hope that helps.

Pokemon. Pick any really, though it's easier to go from old to new rather than the other way around. They're good RPGs for beginners. Another good one is Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga for the GBA. It has timed hits/is more action based, so you can't just turn your brain off and blast through menus.

Final Fantasy IV or VI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Super Mario RPG get my vote. Those started it all for me.

Ah, I actually have a strong distaste for Pokemon..

I've heard a lot of good things about those titles, especially Chrono Trigger. I'll definitely give them a try! Thanks!

I was going to suggest thoe, but on SNES they tend to run a premium.

Chrono Trigger. Extremely easy to pick up and play, relatively "short" with no padding, and simply an incredible game.
Only downside is that it's so good most games you play after will pale in comparison.
(The SNES Chrono Trigger is expensive, but the DS version is pretty much a direct port and runs for much cheaper. Avoid the PS1 port.)

I've decided on Chrono Trigger. It's the one I've heard the most about, and it's one of those games I feel like I should have played already

Super Mario RPG legend of the seven stars
Re: Best RPG for starting out
Good choice with Chrono Trigger, that's a very strong title. Paper Mario was going to be another one I'd suggest, as the RPG elements are well implemented but still fairly light and not intimidating.
