I have Vista already installed in the larger partition, and I have 2 more (one of which completely free to get that Linux distro.
However, I put the CD to boot from it (before Vista boots, of course), and I get this:
ISOLINUX 3.53 Debian-2007-12-11 isolinux:
Cannot boot from this CD. Please try a BIOS update.
My bios is something from American Megatrends...
AMIBIOS American Megatrends v02.61
In the BIOS itself, I can read off that
BIOS Version: 4Core1600Twins-P35 P1.00
My motherboard is precisely an Asrock 4core1600twins-P35, so it can't be that old that Ubuntu can't install!
What can be going wrong here?
Ivo.
Cannot boot Ubuntu installation disc!

Usually it will say on the screen to press del or F2 to get into the BIOS. From there, you need to change the boot order for the CDROM to be first and hard drive second. Some BIOS will let you press F8 to get to a one time boot menu, from there you can select the CDROM and boot to it.
Happy installing.

I should have been clearer - I already changed the boot order to start from the CD before the HDD (otherwise it would just give me Vista, instead of giving me an error related to the CD).retro_gammer79 wrote:Usually it will say on the screen to press del or F2 to get into the BIOS. I'm thinking if I should just use WUBI, installing it INSIDE Windows. Or UNetBootin, if I want it on a separate partition like in a regular install.
Ivo.
UNetBootin might have worked, if I had "proper" net access. As it is, I get my web from a USB modem (mobile broadband) currently and as soon as it reboots to continue the installation no more web, and can't conclude the installation. Made more sense if they downloaded all they needed while still in Vista
I'll try the "non-partition" one later, but I fear it may have the same problem.

I'd take this over to the ubuntu message boards, someone there can probably help you. i've never had any problems running from a liveboot cd. I'm posting from ubuntu on my dual boot system right now.
im sure you probably thought of this, but have you checked to see if there are are any bios upgrades available for your motherboard?
on one of my friends PC's i had to use the "text based" installiation cd, the liveboot was too much for it to handle. perhaps you could give that a try but i doubt it will help your situation. if you've got a bitchin high-speed connection it couldnt hurt anything but a CD-R.

Ironically, the new Ubuntu wouldnt even install on my PC. It got done installing but gave some kind of partition related error before the first boot. Yet the damn thing installed on my laptop, which older versions didn't. I just couldnt get the wireless lan to stay installed. Rebooting causes it to lose the custom drivers.
Try the alternate install CD?
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
observe: Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer.
