Are Japanese Mega Drive games region free?

Post by BoneSnapDeez »

I've heard that some are and some aren't. Is there a list of some sort? I'd like to start importing games and playing them on my Genesis.

As far as I know, anything made up to 92 won't be locked. I found a list through google a while back.

Anything locked should have a game genie code to unlock it. Thats what I used to use to play Thunder Force IV

Oh, and the carts won't naturally fit in a model 1/2. A game genie would also fix this problem, or you can modify the cart bay.

Model 3's will take mega drive carts with no modding.

Most games made past 1993 are region locked. You can use the Game Genie to play them or mod the console.

Dumb question, but instead of Game Genie would a Sonic & Knuckles cart work?

Yeah the reason for using the Game Genie is not only to make the carts fit but to use the Game Genie codes to by-pass the region lock.
