Modding an oXbox?

Post by The Last Horseman »

I want to mod up an oXbox. I don't currently have one, but I kinda want to get one. I know there is a lot you can do with modded ones, but I mostly want to be able to rip (and if possible, burn) dvds, have a internet browser, and be able to download from the internet. I've seen some interesting things with emulation, but the only things I want to emulate on here are very touchy systems- Namely PS2, Dreamcast, and, although even less likely, Sega Saturn. I've seen videos of people playing PS2 and Dreamcast games in modded to crap Xbox's. I've heard good things about what you can do with them too. I just wonder how I need to mod it, possible painting or case swaps, and what extra equipment I might need to get.
Systems: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64, Gamecube, Xbox 360

WTB: Boxes for a silver Gamecube System(and a hyperport cover), and a box for an Ice Blue N64 console. Will pay 7.50 for each and shipping.

If by modded to crap Xbox you mean they physically shoved ps2 hardware in there. Otherwise, the most you're going to be able to emulate is N64 (and even that has playability issues.)

You can put xbox linux on it and use it for web/email, but you'd have to dual boot to play games as it basically turns it into an old PC.

I'm confused. So the more powerful Xbox can't play PS2 or Dreamcast? That's kinda crap. I'm still wondering about the idea of emulators of this type for 360. I could easily see it playing PS2 and Dreamcast games.

Since I already started a topic, what reason would there be to mod a Sega Saturn other than imports? Is there any other?

You have some serious gaps in knowledge about emulation and just computers in general.

Anybody claiming to play PS2 and Dreamcast games on an oXbox is full of shit. It's not possible.

Considering emulation of the PS2 isn't great on modern PCs, it's very unlikely we'll see emulation of PS2 on the current generation of consoles.

I too would like to know how to mod an old Xbox. I have a bunch of these things laying around, and would love to make one of them a dedicated retro box.

Whats the most current gen system they can emulate smoothly? Can we all agree it tops out at about the dreamcast? Even I hear that's not quite ready.

My biggest question is, what brand or type of MOD chip am I looking for, for my needs stated above. I'm ok with a soldering iron, but not great yet.

Any sites with lists of emulators for the xbox would be dearly appreciated as well.!

thanks folks,
Retro.

AFAIK you don't even need a modchip. You can softmod it.

But yeah, me too I would be interested in a few good mod guides / links...

From what I've read, if you're able to put a chip in it then just go that route. You'll get all the same benefits, as far as I know. But with a chip, installing a larger hard drive is a lot easier. Unless things have changed since I've last read into the oXbox mod scene (I was never too big into it any way). Soft mods are for people that are too cheap to buy a chip and are not able to solder.

I think the chip can be installed without soldering.

You just have to slide it in somewhere. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Yeah, I just looked up on modchip.ca and there is a solderless adapter for xecuter chip.

N64 is the best it can do.

You're unlikely to find websites hosting emulators since they are illegal to be distributed thanks to them being compiled with the official SDK. You need to be looking at usenet, torrents or IRC (specifically #xbins on efnet)
