What is Usenet?
Re: What is Usenet?
I'd vote for not paying. Unless your ISP complains about upstream bandwidth, you can get nearly everything off of torrents for free. If you want faster speeds you can get a membership to a private tracker like IPTorrents for max download speeds.
Re: What is Usenet?
Personally torrents satisfy my requirements perfectly well, Bitgamer and UG have 100% download speed on most torrents because it's such a well seeded community. Best of all I don't have to pay for it. I don't think Usenet is worth paying for considering most if not all of stuff released there gets put on torrent anyway. So unless you want everything as soon as it's released (we're talking a 1 or 2 day max lag behind usenet for torrents to appear) then usenet isn't worth the money if your ISP doesn't give you an account.
Most release groups work on IRC anyway, so if you really want the best releases first then learn how to use IRC to it's full extent.

I am getting a clearer idea on what is usenet
The problem with private torrents is that you have to keep a ratio, and a lot of the time people just do not download from you or the torrents you picked. Plus upload speed is much slower than download speed.
But how can you figure whats spam and what is not on usenet?
On torrent I read comments and see number of seeders.
If you upload something on usenet, its there forever?

Re: What is Usenet?
No, topics get purged every so often on usenet, and it various on the newsgroups. If you use a usenet client then you can filter results.
Private trackers really aren't that bad. Uploading whilst your PC is switched on isn't an insurmountable task. I only have 1mbps upload and I still manage to keep at least a 1.25 ratio. On underground gamer I have almost 2.0. Pick a new but popular torrent as your first torrent. Even some older torrents work really well. I upload loads on the GDI Dreamcast torrent, just get a few of the popular games (IE the ones that are superior to the CDI versions like Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue 1 and 2 etc) and watch the torrent seed like crazy. I am always uploading at 100% bandwidth on that torrent and I haven't even got most of the games, only about 10-20% of the entire pack.
Seeding on UG/BG is not hard. It's even easier on BitGamer since all Golden Torrents are freeleech, which means you can download them without it affecting your ratio at all, anything you upload on a golden torrent counts 100% to your ratio.

Re: What is Usenet?
OKAY I finally signed to Giganews trial and I am testing out this Usenet thing. Up until now I do not know whats so special about this thing.
1) There are a ton of groups that I cant understand. I get a folder or a newsgroup. One folder says "alt" and within it another many folders and newsgroups. I dont understand it. Another example is there is a group/folder called "an" and within it there are 2 newsgroups one called economics and one called technical . How can we figure what are these things?
2) I read some posted messages and for the most part things looks like un-moderated forums. A ton of troll , spam , and everything you can think of. Its like a bad form of Kazaa .
3) Where are the downloadable files? I see no files. I click on groups and there is a ton of messages with 1 lines that look like spam. If files exists on the newsgroup its very rare. Plus there is nothing that speaks of the quality of the file, is it a virus? is it corrupted? does it work?
Here I included a picture of how confusing this is, I did a search on gamecube and I got to this news group, I would imagine it has stuff on gamecube but it has files about "YouTube" and "iPhone" .and to be honest I dont see gamecube related material .
I think I am using this Usenet in the very wrong way, i still dont see who would want to pay for this. Can any one explain whats going on to me?

I'll help you out.kingmohd84 wrote:...
Sign up for a Usenet provider
giganews.com
thecubenet.com
easynews.com
Get a newsreader
grabit
sabnbd (it can be fully automated with sick beard and couchpotato)
Then
find a usenet indexer (kind of like torrent sites)
nzbmatrix is a popular one
newzbin2 is also a good choice
Grab the NZB and import it into your newsreader. You should be downloading by now
Re: What is Usenet?
I only torrent something if I can't find it on Usenet - and that's a rarity.
Usenet is the best way to pirate stuff.

Re: What is Usenet?
Back when my ISP still provided newsgroup access years ago, there was a ton of spam. I'm sure it is far worse now, so yes there will be tons of crap to wade through as well as tons of idiots. I did find some nice groups that were better than others though and got a bunch of nice fantasy art scans and whatnot back then though.

Well the cool thing is using NZB files. You don't even have to 'subscribe' to certain groups using your reader. You just download an NZB (much like a .torrent) and execute it. It then opens your reader and starts downloading from where ever it's told to. It's really low maintenance, lol.
