After seeing the very impressive Arkham City PhysX demo it made me want to check out this old chestnut. Is it possible to use, say a cheap 9600 or something like that in conjunction with an AMD HD6950 to enable PhysX? I know at one point this was possible due to hacked drivers etc. I wondered if nVidia closed the door on it, or if it's not compatible with newer games?
Anybody know any info regarding this?

OTOH, it used to be possible, but nVidia started disabling Physix if a non-nVidia card is detected on the dual card system. They got a lot of flak for it, but nothing's changed.
I remember that their official reason is that they don't want to deal with customer support for problems that were caused by a different manufacturer's card, and also to avoid incompatibilities and stuff like that.

It's not possible nowadays, plus, it's a bit of a warning, PhysX in general is insanely demanding. I get 60-40 FPS (V-Sync enabled) on Batman Arkham Asylum on medium PhysX on a single GTX 460 1GB @800/1600/1800mhz, I get 55-20 FPS on High PhysX on the same PC. It basically requires 2 GPU's.

Yes but I'd be using a separate GPU solely for PhysX which mitigates that issue entirely.KillerJuan77 wrote:It's not possible nowadays, plus, it's a bit of a warning, PhysX in general is insanely demanding. 2 GTX 460's should be enough for the game, unless the DX11 options are insanely demanding, in that case I'd get 2 GTX 460's and an 8800gt for PhysX (For 1080p60 gameplay at max settings).Niode wrote:Yes but I'd be using a separate GPU solely for PhysX which mitigates that issue entirely.KillerJuan77 wrote:It's not possible nowadays, plus, it's a bit of a warning, PhysX in general is insanely demanding. Why would I want 2 GTX 460s when I have a HD6950 2GB?KillerJuan77 wrote:2 GTX 460's should be enough for the game, unless the DX11 options are insanely demanding, in that case I'd get 2 GTX 460's and an 8800gt for PhysX (For 1080p60 gameplay at max settings).Niode wrote:Yes but I'd be using a separate GPU solely for PhysX which mitigates that issue entirely.KillerJuan77 wrote:It's not possible nowadays, plus, it's a bit of a warning, PhysX in general is insanely demanding. Re: AMD Graphics + PhysX Possible?
Due to PhysX, Nvidia 3D Vision and the fantastic overclock capabilities? (It's easy to OC one to GTX 470/570 levels)Niode wrote:Why would I want 2 GTX 460s when I have a HD6950 2GB?
Re: AMD Graphics + PhysX Possible?
Meh... The only thing that appeals to me is the PhysX, a 570 wouldn't really give me much over my 6950 (which has been bios modded to 6970) besides a very large hole in my pocket. nVidia GPUs are ridiculously overpriced. 3D vision means nothing to me since I don't have (nor want) a 3D monitor. Overclock? My 6950 already outperforms a 470 by a large margin anyway and I haven't even over clocked it.KillerJuan77 wrote:Due to PhysX, Nvidia 3D Vision and the fantastic overclock capabilities?
