This is a really in-depth and nuanced topic. Personally i'm not about to spew my feelings on all of the complexities involved here.

I just want to simply say - any WAR with China would look nothing like the war in Vietnam. The loser of a traditional war would be subject to unimaginable (perceived mind you) indenture. Thus losing a war would not be an option. Thus it would be a nuclear war. Thus, most, if not all of us would be dead.

So lets not worry about this too much for now.

I doubt we'd get into a full scale war at all. Everybody has far too much to lose.

I love how Obama was coming to Darwin to pay respect to the Men and Women who died during the bombing on Darwin via WW2 (An attack that was larger than Pearl Harbor, but with less people dying). In which Australia and American started signing treaties and what not.

Yet he uses it to announce the stationing of troops over here, seems a bit disrespectful.

I just wish the USA (my country) would stop expanding its overseas military influence. The country is way in debt. We literally do not have the money to do this.

This really isn't that much of a problem. You can't put a price on safety, and overseas presence is more than just pomp and swollen egos.

We're not going to be safe if foreign investors decide the dollar is unstable and pull out. Without value behind our dollar we cannot defend ourselves. We are overextending our resources and very clearly living a lifestyle we cannot sustain. Our leaders bicker all day to reduce the deficit, not the debt.

Besides, I think our international strategies make enemies out of countries that otherwise would not be. Sanctions, drones, and a policy of preemptive strikes make for many people that hate the US.

This is completely false, although the lie appears to be the dominant thinking among mainstream news "journalists" (aka pundits with pretension of partiality, and also pundits with no such pretension at all!) today.

Murderous dictators are not our business. We are not the world's police. We cannot afford to be the world's police. Our government is corrupt and manipulative. We only help when it suits us. We bribe leaders to get what we want. We do not make good police.

Many dictators we support until convenient or have put into power ourselves. Our dicking with the Iranian government in the 1950's is a major reason for the anti-American sentiment over there.

We create terrorists through our foreign policy. Our government would have us believe they hate us for our ideals of "freedom and liberty" . Pretty sure secret off-shore prisons where we break US law and international law with illegal, immoral, and undignified acts of torture don't help. Always thought secret prisons were more of a characteristic of corrupt, totalitarian governments myself.
