What was the last movie you've seen?

Batman: Year One. Good, but it's only flaw is its short runtime. And personally, IMHO, it would have looked WAY better if it was done in hand-drawn animation, cuz the computer-based 2D animation looks WAY too slick while keeping a certain cheapness to it. But with a story like this, who gives a shit?

I have to say I agree. I enjoyed it, but I really did hate the voice they chose for Bruce Wayne. It's the kid from the OC, or something right? I dunno. I love me some Kevin Conroy, but I also really like Bruce Greenwood too.. I know Bruce is s'posed to be very young but the VO was just very groany and dare I say - whiny.

But other than that, I thought it was really good too.

I saw the trailer for the US remake when I went to see In Time and I was confused, and thoroughly uninterested. My sister raves about the books and the Swede versions of the films so I watched the first one last night.

It was fantastic. Sucked me right in within the first 10 minutes. Gotta watch the others, but I'm still kinda uninterested in the US version because they'll likely change something key to the story.

To me, the Puppet Master franchise has always been teetering on the edge of being really cool, but due to a majority of its ill-fittingly dry dialogue, it just ends up being pretty cool.

The Innocents from 1961. Based on Henry James’s short story The Turn of the Screw and with a screenplay written by Truman Capote, tells the story of Miss Giddens who is charged with the responsibility of taking care of two children, young Miles and Flora. The children's uncle, busy in London and uninterested in them sends the governess to the sprawling, but practically empty estate (there are probably 3 other adults there), to take care of them. Miss Giddens is charmed and taken by the young pair, but begins to grow uneasy when she starts witnessing strange things and slowly senses that the two children are not always acting as themselves.

As her stay continues she becomes conviced that the children are somehow under the spell of the spirits of the children's former warden/valet Peter Quint, and former governess, Miss Jessel. The two spirits have a seemingly dangerous power over her new wards, causing them to be overly scheming, secretive, mischievous and sometimes violent, to the point where young Miles is expelled from his boarding school.


You just wait till I find out what you're hiding from me, you little snots.

This is a true ghost story at it's heart, and it's most surely one of the better ones. The use of sound adds beautifully to the tension, where seemingly harmless noises (birds, giggling) take on a menacing edge. The use of subtle visual cues, often seen to the viewer before the protagonist, also have the potential to haunt many a nightmare.


Where the hell did he come from!?

Miss Giddens gradual decent into panic is harrowing, yet at the same time leaves room in the viewers mind to question whether or not there are really ghosts or if the strange happenings are the result of the fevered imaginings of a disturbed woman.


Trying to find the source of those strange noises on those sprawling estates in the middle of the night probably isn't the best thing for anyone's psyche.

The art direction in this movie is beautiful, as should be expected. It is a large semi-gothic manor after all, so there is no shortage of excellent opportunity. It should also come as no surprise that some of the most beautiful moments involve the ominous specters themselves.


Must be a ghost. There's no other reason for her to be out there in that dress.

It must also be said that the children in this film are exceptional. They have wonderful brother-sister chemestry and Martin Stephens (Miles) is very good at transitioning from angelic to ominous at the drop of a hat.


He is truly effectively creepy. Course, the damn ghost behind him doesn't hurt.

Overall, The Innocents is an excellent ghost story, but also has elements of suspense and psychological horror. So if those sound appealing to you than this is definitely something you'll want to take a look at.



SIDE NOTE: If you haven't seen the movie yet, but swear the plot sounds eerily familiar, that's because the source material, The Turn of the Screw, has been the inspiration of opera and radio adaptations, as well as about 11-12 different movie/TV adaptations, including The Others with Nicole Kidman (which was more inspired by the book than an adaptation of it, but you get the point).

I used to rent these at the local video store when I was kid. I would watch 70s & 80s horror franchise runs because I was stuck at home watching my brother. A good friend of mine that lived right across the street was stuck in the same situation so we'd bring each other's siblings to one house to play at, and then the two of us would watch horror movies (and play Sega & NES games) while we watched them. The Puppet Masters was in popular rotation along with the Friday the 13ths, Nightmare on Elm Streets, & George Romero's Dead Trilogy.
