GOG to take on Steam at their own game.

Post by Niode »

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011- ... -new-games

GOG will begin to add new games to their existing repertoire of the finest PC games of yesteryear by 2012. It will be interesting to see whether they go the same route as Steam and create a client that fleshes out the existing GOG downloader or just stick with the same web based system.

At least it won't be plagued with the same horrid support that Origin has and best of all no DRM!

I have mixed feelings on this. I'd love to be able to get new games DRM-Free, and if anyone can do it, GOG can.

I will just miss having the site focused on older games. I love to go to a website where all of the banners, thread topics, and commerce are focused on retro PC gaming. I love that there is fanfare whenever something like Zork is "released" on the site. It's like a celebration of gaming history. If they really want to go head-to-head with Steam though, they are going to have to start putting ad banners for new releases on the home page, and it will just change the whole feel of GOG. I'm not going to like that. It's not enough to make me leave, and I will buy new games from them, but I will miss the good old GOG.

Same as JT. I wish GoG would stay GoG and CD Projket would release a new DRM free site for new games. I mean, I know they have both Witchers on GoG but that is different. I enjoy steam, but a new fps I know I will play lan more than online, I would be more inclined to get the GoG version.

I just submitted a suggestion that expressed what I just stated in this thread and suggested a sister site to GOG called Good New Games (GNG) that keeps the retro and current gen communities separated. Then they could transfer their games over from GNG to GOG after 5 years have passed.

If anyone else cares about this enough to write to gog as well, here is where you can send them your suggestions:

I will send that suggestion as well.

I would really like if they had an Steam-like overlay, though. It just keeps things so much more neat and clean. Organizing my GOG collection is a bit of a nightmare for me.

New PC releases with no DRM? I'm way jiggy with this.

Gotta say I'm with JT on this one. I go to GoG for old stuff and would like them to stick with that more than not, but a sister site with a separate library and everything would be a great idea as well. I can just imagine if they start adding in new games it's going to flood their selection and all the old stuff will be buried while navigating around and whatnot.

I like how the GOG collection installs to the Games folder on Windows 7. I get these nice pretty box arts. The only thing is I wish they updated their dosbox configs to maintain the aspect ratio on widescreen monitors. I have to manually update that myself.

My system is a total joke as far as organisation goes. I really need to just wipe it and start again.
