As more time passes I get the feeling that the original Xbox is getting more rare and obscure . I think its game library is a great one! Even though I got to play some xbox during its time, I am not sure what place did the original xbox take between gamers, I have the idea that it wasnt too popular.
Now that it is old(retro), can any one tell me how is it settling between other game consoles? Do gamers appreciate it? Hate it? how is it doing in the retro scene? I hear much more people recommending snes games than xbox games, or even dreamcast games .
I got the feeling this system price will soon rise like crazy and so its games. What do u think?
How is the original Xbox shaping?
Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
Out of all my retro consoles, it gets the least play. Mainly because most xbox games worth playing either work on the 360 or had PC ports.
Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
I think it will be largely forgotten actually. The library was always somewhat limited. The big appeal of the Xbox was XBMC and emulators. Those are better done on an HTPC these days. Add in backwards compatibility and the original Xbox finds itself in a very small niche.

Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
I sort of doubt we'd see much of a spike in Xbox pricing or even interest. Most of its notable games were either multi-platform or were unequivocally improved upon by later iterations. There may be a slight increase for select titles if, say, original Xbox downloads don't carry over to Microsoft's next console, but I personally just don't think that anything about the Xbox was designed to gain value over time. The only titles which I would imagine gaining value over time are the gems associated with Sega (both produced by them, or games which the company is heavily tied to such as Phantom Dust and Otogi 2), simply as a carry-over of the rising fanaticism for the Dreamcast. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/the-1 ... s-allowed/
Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
I don't think the hardware will ever be rare, in the U.S. at least. There's less motivation to actually hook one up since a lot of the library can be played on the 360 - though to a point you also just have sequels on the 360 that people would be more likely to play anyway.
I do think it'll eventually see some demand for a relatively small set of titles, provided they don't get rereleased in some form (if not already). 'course, even fewer of those will probably actually be valuable...but that's not necessarily the measure of something worth playing.

It could be a collectable one day, for the unique games and accessories such as the Mech Warrior controllers. Games such as Conker tease me to pick up an old XBox. Does Conker work on the 360?
There is a used XBox for twelve dollars at a local Thrift store. I did not buy it because it may not work and is HUGE. Maybe other collectors are also put off by the footprint this monster takes?
So tempting, if only the Mech controllers were not so expensive!

I dunno about that. Steel Battalion cost $200 when it was released, and you can get it now for half of that. I don't really see it rising in price in the future. Anyone who cares about it either has it now, or wants to get lucky and pick it up cheap. I'd agree that this is likely to be one of the most valuable Xbox collectors items, but I don't think it's going to be particularly valuable.

Part of that could be the time from release. Stuff like the Virtual Boy or Jaguar CD didn't exactly spike up in value off the bat. Granted, Steel Batallion/etc has been out for a while, but maybe just not long enough.Hatta wrote:I dunno about that. Yes, but it's got bugs (according to Wikipedia's list).CRTGAMER wrote:Games such as Conker tease me to pick up an old XBox. Does Conker work on the 360?
Honestly, the emulation has enough little quirks here n' there anyway that a few bucks for the original console probably would be worth it. Much like keeping a PSX around even if you have a PS2 or PS3 hooked up, just in case. 'course, a lot of issues seem performance related, and could be diminished if future XBox consoles still include the ability to play XBox games (which seems somewhat likely if MS hopes to sell them on Live).
IMO, it can also be a matter of whether an individual "counts" PC releases or not. If the latter, you have a fair number of games where the XBox received the only console version. Bioware RPGs for example.

One thing you gotta watch out for when you find them at fleamarkets is that sometimes they are no longer complete.
Locally here, some old xboxes get gutted for their hard drives. And they are small capacity too, so its stupid. Why take them apart when there are bigger hard drives to get? There are times when they are plentiful and they just sit around not getting sold. So Whats gonna happen in a few years?
These hard drives are repurposed for older PC's that still sell here. Being on the border with Mexico, some people still buy old ass PC's.
For some of you that may not be a problem, cause you can mod the Xbox with a bigger hard drive to play emulated.
Also for being neglected for so many years and stuck in an old garage/storage. They get "garage hair" A greasy slime, dust and old cat hairs that cover stuff that hasnt been messed with in a while.
They are fixable/cleanable but its so much easier to get them complete, if you know where to look.

Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
From my experience, no one wants them any more.
I couldn't seem to sell my oXbox with a softmod and some goodies on the forum here, no one wanted to buy it.
