3rd time was the charm with Cain, and finally promoted someone as Mae reached lvl 20.

EDIT: Now Dianne, the werewolf and Ken are all promoted too!

For you guys worried about leveling up, you really don't need to. The game can totally be finished without redoing a single battle or grinding. The first few times I played through Shining Force, I didn't even think to Egress and redo a battle for experience. It is totally possible to get through without losing a battle (although you might lose one or two) or grinding. I think the first time I played it when it originally came out, I got though without grinding at all. I believe I lost the carnival tent battle once, and maybe one of the later battles, but that was about it. Just play smart and you can do it. :)

Yup, I think my strategy was just kind of sloppy for this first battle in chapter 3. I'll give it another go sometime tonight.

I have to imagine the game is very doable if you promote people around level ~15 or so as well? I probably won't go all the way to 20, but 15-19 would probably work out really well I'd think.

Ok, I just beat the game and the ending was so corny it was awesome... make sure you watch all the credits.

Anyway the final battle can be brutal. Most of my characters were around level 40 (add pre and post promotion level) and it was still rough taking down the final boss because of the outrageous amount of HP he has.
Anyway, I would recommend grinding only by egressing when a battle gets bad and then replaying the level. I also agree that the characters that I promoted at 20 were noticeably better than those leveled up at 16 or lower.

Make sure you do this.

I had Max equip the evil ring for the final battle. Sure you're cursed, but it still made things easier for me at least.

Apparently curses work differently in the gba version though. I guess there's some holy ring that undoes the effects of a curse and the effects of being cursed are much harsher.

I should also mention that you can totally beat the game without grinding and promoting everyone at level 10. :) That's how we used to do it back in the day. You kinds and your grinding and lvl 16+ promotions...

Chapter 4! Chapter 3 was a little short.

Hmm, I want to keep it at two Centaurs. Mae's been rocking right now, it looks like Arthur can learn magic but he's still not doing too hot. Maybe it'd be better to switch him out with Pelle who I just got? So many characters! But I love having an army and choices, haha.

That's what I like about this one. In 3 I felt like grinding was definitely required, especially to do the end-game bonus dungeon. I still see 3 as a 10/10 game but I always appreciate a grind free SRPG.
