SNES and Genesis have their share of advantages and disadvatages. All things taken into consideration, I'd say they were equals.

I was surprised to see the title of this thread, Neo Geo obviously

You know why SEGA called its console 'Genesis' for a reason because its FIRST !

I loved the name "Genesis" when I was younger, but now I think Mega Drive is a way cooler name. Plus, "Genesis" doesn't really make a lot of sense. I mean, it was Sega's SIXTH console (second in the US and, I believe, Europe). Maybe they viewed it as a new beginning, since their previous consoles didn't take off in Japan or the USA?

Re: Is the Neo Geo more powerful than the Super Nintendo?
The Neo Geo has has a total of 65,535 colors with a total of 4096 onscreen whereas the SNES has only has a wimpy 32,768 colors with 256 on screen at once. Neo Geo wins there.
CPU, no contest, Neo Geo rapes the SNES CPU, abducts it, makes it its slave and emotionally abuses it for the rest of its life. Hell, the Neo Geo's Z80 pretty much does that.
There are a few things the SNES can do that the Neo Geo cannot. Mode 7 has a few advantages over the Neo Geo's built-in scaling in that it can rotate a screen, be made to look like it has perspective (F-Zero, etc) and the like. Neo Geo cannot do hardware rotation at all. Have you ever noticed that when things scale on the SNES, they get quite blocky? Not so on the Neo Geo. Due to the larger memory and FAR better sprite handling, they could draw the images large in the first place, so that when something is scaled to a huge size, that's actually the sprite's native resolution. Also, the SNES can't even scale sprites without an extra chip in the cartridge like the Super FX. All scaling and rotation is a background layer. SNES can do transparency. Neo Geo cannot despite its massive amount of colors (it probably could via software, but Neo programmers were pretty lazy in that regard). One other thing the SNES can do is add reverb to the sound via hardware. The Neo Geo, like other systems, needed to dedicate an extra sound channel or two just for this effect. But I think the SNES was way too reverby in just about every single game. It was way overused.
But basically, yes, the Neo Geo will win in sheer power over the SNES despite the inability to do a few mundane things.

meaning "origin", "In [the] beginning, is the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. So when kids heard the word Genesis mentioned in Church what comes to mind is the console,Breetai wrote:First for what? I think everyone here knows that that means and that it's the first book of the Pentateuch. That's not at all what I was saying, though.benderx wrote:meaning "origin", "In [the] beginning, is the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament.
So I assume most parents bought the console because of the name [Genesis].

It's the end of 2011 and people are still debating which consoles of the early 90's were better?
