DC Imports

Post by KoLAddict »

How hard is it to mod the Dreamcast to play imports? is there a way to softmod it safely, like with the Saturn, or does it pretty much require a modchip?

I'm not a fan of playing burned titles unless they are translations, I prefer to play the actual game, as I own so many games anymore that I've bought I don't really play burned stuff.

He is selling a region free Dreamcast. Might be Cheaper and easier to buy pre-modified

DC requires modding for automatic region free, without swaps or switching. Can save a lot of time in the long run.

Methods like boot discs must be invoked every time you want to play a different format game. Some people don't mind the wait, but those who use imports frequently may find it annoying.

Unless you're going mad switching to a different import game every 5 minutes, a boot disc isn't that big of a hassle. But if that's what you're doing, why not sit still and play ONE game for more than 5 minutes?

There's the old mod chips that will make the Dreamcast region free. I don't know how easy these things are to get a hold of these days. There's a region free BIOS now, you can use that:

http://mmmonkey.co.uk/console/sega/dc-dev-bios.htm

I haven't read that guide in a while, but IIRC, it shows you how to install the new chip in your Dreamcast so that you can flash the BIOS to it yourself. But if you can get some one to flash the chip for you, all you have to do is remove the old BIOS chip and install the new one. Easy as pie.

Boot disc is definitely the way to go for me, I'm horrified of actually soldering a chip.

Is there a boot disc I can buy anyone is aware of, or will the Dreamcast play CD-Rs? I found a site that will let me download it directly from them to burn if I can just do a CD-R.

dreamcast can play any self-boot cd-rs.

Yeah, I just burned my boot disc onto a cd-r

I just leave the boot disc in my system. When I decide to play, say, Zero Gunner 2, I boot the system, grab the game off the shelf, open, and switch discs, putting the boot disc in the case of the game I'm playing.

To me, this is no more hassle than just putting in a game regularly.

Yeah definitely not, anything that allows me to safely play imports is good. Thanks all, that helped a ton. Importing is great, I often save money even with just the small stuff, like platformers/fighters.
